Blockchain, AI and Digital Product Passports Explained

· 2024-10-13 · Updated 2026-09-23 · 2 min read

Viamedici and Sustain360™ are tying blockchain and AI to Digital Product Passports, lined up with the European Commission’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). The write-up is on Viamedici.

Blockchain and AI inside the PIM

They use blockchain to validate and secure sustainability data, so the environmental record on a product is harder to alter after the fact. AI reads that environmental data and is meant to support more sustainable product designs. Machine learning is described as a way to search for production methods that cut waste and raise energy efficiency. The output they claim is a set of actions a business can take, not a dashboard for its own sake.

What the passport is supposed to hold

A DPP is scoped to the life of the product: origin through end of use, including the environmental credentials a circular model needs. Viamedici points to its EPIM platform together with Sustain360™’s digital-twin technology as the way a business meets decarbonization benchmarks. They have also discussed the approach on LinkedIn.

What ESPR asks for

ESPR sets requirements for product circularity and energy performance. It moves past earlier policy that focused on energy alone and covers a wider mix of product categories. The regulation is framed as a way to cut energy consumption by 2030, and as a requirement that products carry as little environmental harm as the rules allow.

What travels past this one partnership

Blockchain and AI in the PIM are their route to an ESPR-aligned record. If other markets ask for the same passport, the DPP stops being a European file format and becomes a shared sustainability record. Viamedici and Sustain360™ are one commercial version of that shift in product-lifecycle data.
