CNET and GS1: The Dynamic Duo of PIM

Sophia Mokrytska · 2023-04-19 · Updated 2026-09-23 · 2 min read

Product information in a PIM is only as current as the sources you load. For commerce teams, two external sources come up together: CNET for consumer-electronics content, and GS1 for identifiers and the shared product record. The PIM is where those sources land, and from there you publish one record to every sales channel.

CNET

CNET publishes product information, reviews, and ratings for consumer electronics. Organisations that sell computers, smartphones, and home entertainment use it for detailed specifications, expert reviews, and user ratings, so the product information stays accurate and current.

GS1

GS1 develops and maintains the standards for identifying, capturing, and sharing product information. The data includes product codes, descriptions, packaging, and nutritional information. Retailers, manufacturers, and distributors use it so the same product stays consistent across locations and languages.

Other feeds

Common sources next to those two:

  • Internal systems, including ERP and PLM.
  • External systems, such as supplier databases.
  • User-generated content, such as customer reviews and ratings.
  • APIs that expose any of the above.

Each source is strong at one job and weak at another. Choose from the need you have, then judge quality and how reliable the feed is. Accurate, current product information is what customer trust sits on. Count the cost and the complexity of each integration, and whether your team can run it after go-live.

CNET fills the descriptive content. GS1 keeps the identity stable. ERP, PLM, suppliers, reviews, and APIs fill the rest. Load the right ones, keep them reliable, and the catalog you syndicate stays comparable across channels.
