Google Shopping Unveils an AI-Powered Shopping Experience

In October 2024 Google rebuilt Google Shopping around AI. The announcement cites 45 billion product listings, enriched with Gemini models. Search is supposed to return the product and the supporting detail that match the query.
What the shopper sees
A query for a winter jacket that can handle Seattle's damp weather gets an AI-written summary of what to weigh, product recommendations checked by experts elsewhere on the web, and a short list of relevant jacket categories.
There is also a personal shopping home. It mixes shoppable products and videos from earlier visits, and it picks up where the shopper stopped. Deal search runs through the platform, with a separate deals page built from that same history.
Google's AI added interactive checks before the purchase: virtual try-on with AR and generative AI, so fit and style can be judged on screen.
How it rolled out
Google said the rollout had started in the United States and would continue over the following weeks. The new AI summaries carried an experimental label. Google asked shoppers to flag mistakes.
For brands, the surface is product listing ads plus these assistive shopping steps. The ad meets the shopper while the decision is still open.
What the PIM has to supply
The summary, the category list, the try-on, and the deal page all read product data. If the attributes, images, and availability are thin or stale, the AI has nothing accurate to summarize and the listing is a weak candidate for the personal home page. The PIM job is the record those surfaces read: complete attributes, current offers, and assets that a try-on can use.
