Core
The MACH Alliance and PIM for Next-Gen E-commerce

MACH architecture is a way of building software from four choices: microservices, API-first, cloud-native, and headless. The MACH Alliance is the group behind that definition. A PIM still has a job in that stack, because product data is not a presentation problem.
The four parts
Microservices are small services, each with one function, developed, deployed, and scaled on their own. Together they make the larger application.
API-first means the function of the application is exposed as APIs that other applications call. Integration is a contract, not a shared database.
Cloud-native means the application is built to run in the cloud and to use its scaling, availability, and cost profile. It is also built to tolerate failure.
Headless separates the content system from the presentation layer, so the same content can go to more than one channel or device.
What you get from that split
- Modularity. A service can change without a release of the whole application, which is how the stack follows a changing business.
- Agility. New services and platforms connect through APIs instead of through a rewrite.
- Scalability. Cloud deployment handles scaling and load balancing. A single microservice can scale on its own when that function is the bottleneck.
- Flexibility across channels. Headless content is not tied to one storefront.
- Cost. Cloud-native deployment is meant to run with less idle capacity, which is where the cost case comes from.
Where the PIM sits
Omnichannel selling is why teams look at this stack: more than one front end, each able to change. The PIM is the product record those front ends read. APIs and microservices are how that record is delivered. They do not replace the work of managing names, attributes, assets, and channel-specific content.
Put the PIM on the MACH stack and the catalog stays put while channels move. That is the combination: product information in the PIM, delivery through the modular architecture, so digital work, the customer experience, and time to market are not blocked by a monolith.
