Instacart's Smart Carts Transform In-Store Advertising

· 2024-10-17 · Updated 2026-09-23 · 2 min read

Instacart put three new ad formats on its Caper Carts and is using AI to personalize what the cart shows in the aisle. The carts tie to the shopper's Instacart account. They tick items off a list and suggest offers. The AI reads loyalty-card programs, past purchases, and where the shopper is in the store. General Mills and PepsiCo are already buying that aisle placement.

What the formats do

Quests turn a shop into a hunt for products and savings. Location-based ads point at deals nearby. Personalized coupons are already in use: more than 40% of Caper Cart users take them.

The store floor has usually been a poor data environment. These formats need a product record that can be matched to a place, a loyalty history, and an offer. If the name, pack, or price on the cart does not match the shelf, the ad is wrong in the moment the shopper can act.

What Lipsman flagged

Independent retail-media analyst Andrew Lipsman described a split reaction. Some shoppers will reject the extra ads. Others will take the tailored discounts. He treats the cart as performance advertising that can move what people buy, and he treats adoption as the open question: how many shoppers use the cart as a habit, not as a trial.

Where the carts came from

The carts arrived with Instacart's acquisition of Caper AI. The point is larger than a grocery list. Instacart is going after a share of the retailer's technology budget and a new ad surface inside the store.

For product data, the requirement is omnichannel in the literal sense. The same item needs a record that can drive a site, an Instacart listing, and a screen on a cart, including an offer that is valid in that aisle. PIM systems that only publish a web catalog do not cover that screen.

Whether the cart resets what shoppers expect in the aisle is still open. The data requirement is not. The screen is only as right as the product and offer data behind it.
