Nutri-Score 2.0? New update by European committee
Sophia Mokrytska · 2022-09-21 · 1 min read

By the end of this year, a new version of the Nutri-Score, with stricter criteria for sugar, salt, and meat, will be available. The algorithm modification increases the difficulty of obtaining an A rating, resulting in a reduction in the availability of products with this rating. The revised algorithm emphasizes the stricter evaluation of sugars and salt while taking a more lenient approach to fatty fish and poultry.
As a result of scientific advice on the beverage category, the food industry will need to make adjustments to logos and packaging. This revision marks the first significant update since the launch of Nutri-Score in 2017. According to the Belgian newspaper De Standaard, the changes have already received approval from the seven countries that have implemented the system nationally, including France and the Benelux countries.
In Italy, the label has faced criticism from the market authority, which considers it arbitrary and biased. Consequently, chains like Carrefour should remove the nutritional scores from packaging in Italy.
