SAP Closed the Reltio Deal: What Changed for MDM, MDG and PIM Buyers

· 2026-10-21 · 7 min read

SAP completed its acquisition of Reltio on 7 May 2026 and now sells it as SAP Reltio in SAP Business Data Cloud, which SAP said was generally available at SAP Connect in October 2026. SAP positions SAP Reltio next to SAP Master Data Governance (MDG), not in place of it, and it is discontinuing MDG, cloud edition. For PIM teams the split of work stays the same. A master data platform decides which record is the real customer, supplier or product across systems. The PIM owns the sellable product content that goes out to channels.

Our news item from April, SAP bets on Reltio to fix AI's data problem, was written after the March announcement and covers SAP's strategic argument. This article covers what SAP and Reltio have put on record since the deal closed.

Key takeaways

  • The deal is done and priced. SAP's Half-Year Report 2026 lists a total consideration of €1,076 million, of which €979 million was paid in cash.
  • SAP Reltio is a product now. It is sold inside SAP Business Data Cloud in three editions, and the Reltio portfolio stays available as a standalone offering "for the foreseeable future".
  • MDG stays, one edition goes. SAP calls MDG and SAP Reltio complementary, and existing MDG, cloud edition subscriptions will not be renewed.
  • A PIM still has its own job. None of the SAP Reltio material we found describes channel content, translations, digital assets or marketplace feeds.

What is on record since the close

SAP and Reltio announced the deal on 27 March 2026 without disclosing terms and expected it to close in Q2 or Q3 (SAP News). SAP announced completion on 7 May (SAP News), and Reltio now calls itself "Reltio, an SAP company" (Reltio).

The price came out with SAP's half-year figures. SAP reports €979 million in cash, €96 million in share-based payment awards and €1 million in other liabilities, a total of €1,076 million. SAP already held 3% of Reltio's shares before the deal, and it calls the accounting preliminary (SAP Half-Year Report 2026).

The product followed in October. SAP's Connect 2026 news guide says "SAP Reltio is generally available now" in SAP Business Data Cloud (SAP Connect 2026 news guide). The product page lists entity resolution across SAP and non-SAP sources, continuous data quality monitoring, lineage and consent controls, industry "velocity packs" and more than 1,000 connectors (SAP).

The commercial model is in SAP's Business Data Cloud service description guide. It lists SAP Reltio in an analytical, an operational and a business-critical edition, sold in blocks of 50,000 Objects, plus an agent service called SAP Reltio AgentFlow that is counted per action. An Object is one consolidated profile of a business object, such as a material, customer or vendor, built from one or more sources (SAP service description guide). For a product team this means the bill scales with the number of unified product and party records, not with users.

Where SAP Reltio sits next to SAP MDG

SAP describes the two as complementary products in the same layer. MDG enforces governance and process control when master data is created in SAP ERP. SAP Reltio unifies master data from other SAP applications, non-SAP systems and third-party data, and keeps checking its quality. SAP says existing MDG customers can add SAP Reltio when their master data spans systems beyond SAP ERP (SAP).

One MDG product is going. An SAP product expert wrote on the SAP Community that SAP is discontinuing the SAP BTP-based MDG, cloud edition. Existing subscriptions are honoured until contract end, renewals are not possible and the free tier is gone. For S/4HANA governance, SAP points to MDG in S/4HANA Cloud, Private Edition and in S/4HANA Cloud, Public Edition (SAP Community). Companies on the cloud edition therefore have a contract end date to plan around.

A second SAP Community post from July describes the longer-term aim: one MDM layer inside Business Data Cloud, paid for in Business Data Cloud capacity units, where the customer does not need to know whether MDG or SAP Reltio does the work. The same post says MDG is now also sold inside Business Data Cloud as "SAP MDG private cloud, extra stack" (SAP Community).

Where a PIM fits

Our SAP S/4HANA product data architecture guide gives each kind of product data one owner. S/4HANA keeps the material master for operations and finance, an MDM platform governs the shared record across ERP instances and business units, and the PIM holds the sellable product. SAP Reltio is a candidate for that middle role in SAP companies, for products as well as customers, suppliers, locations and assets.

The material SAP has published describes identity, quality and data products for applications, analytics and AI agents. It does not describe marketing copy, translations, digital assets, channel-specific attributes or marketplace and retailer feeds. That work stays with the PIM. Some vendors, such as Stibo Systems and Viamedici, combine MDM and PIM functions in one platform, which the architecture guide covers as a separate setup.

The practical change is one more system that can publish product fields. If SAP Reltio resolves product identity across S/4HANA and other ERPs, the PIM may read the golden record from SAP Reltio, from S/4HANA, or from both. Each field needs one publishing system. The SAP S/4HANA PIM connector comparison sets out how six PIM vendors and six iPaaS platforms connect to S/4HANA. It does not yet cover connections to SAP Reltio, and we did not find a PIM vendor that documents one.

What it means for non-SAP shops and current Reltio customers

Reltio's close announcement says its commitment to an open ecosystem continues. For customers who do not run SAP, it says the focus stays on unifying data wherever it resides, with more options over time to connect into SAP's data platform (Reltio). SAP's March release said customers can buy Reltio as a separate solution or with other SAP products (SAP News).

Forrester read the same promises more cautiously in March. Its analysts wrote that "standalone for the foreseeable future" is not an operating guarantee, and that SAP's commercial incentives will favour SAP-first customers unless buyers constrain that in contracts. They advise asking SAP in writing for an MDG roadmap, Business Data Cloud pricing with Reltio included and parity for non-SAP connectors (Forrester). That is Forrester's view, and it predates the close.

Reltio is the second large MDM vendor to join a platform company. Our PIM market acquisitions and funding timeline puts it next to Salesforce and Informatica, and lists the contract points that usually change after the first renewal.

What SAP has not said yet

  • An end date for standalone Reltio. "For the foreseeable future" has no date attached in any SAP or Reltio source we found.
  • An MDG to SAP Reltio migration path. SAP describes the two as complementary and publishes no migration or coexistence roadmap beyond that positioning.
  • Money prices. The service description guide gives capacity unit values per block of Objects. It does not publish a price per capacity unit, which is set in the customer's Business Data Cloud contract.
  • Contract moves for existing Reltio customers. We found no public description of how standalone Reltio contracts move to SAP terms at renewal.
  • PIM integrations. SAP mentions more than 1,000 connectors but does not list which PIM systems SAP Reltio connects to.
