BetterCommerce PIM Alternatives: 7 PIM Solutions to Compare
Stephan Spijkers · 2026-10-11 · Updated 2026-10-12 · 8 min read

BetterCommerce PIM usually arrives as part of a bigger decision: a composable commerce suite with storefront, order management and content in one place. Teams compare it with standalone PIMs when that decision changes, or when the PIM has to do more than feed the BetterCommerce storefront. This guide covers what it is, why teams look elsewhere, and seven alternatives with what to check for each.
What BetterCommerce PIM is and who it fits
According to our BetterCommerce PIM profile, BetterCommerce is a UK vendor that sells its PIM as SaaS or cloud-hosted to mid-market and enterprise companies. The PIM is one module of the BetterCommerce suite, next to e-commerce, order management, content management and analytics. The profile lists:
- A central product repository with attributes, categories, variants, media and relationships.
- Multichannel syndication with channel-specific content.
- DAM for images, video and documents linked to products.
- Localization for several languages, currencies and region-specific data.
- Roles, workflows, audit logs and flexible data modeling.
- GraphQL and REST APIs, with out-of-the-box support for Akeneo, BigCommerce, Shopify Plus and Adobe Commerce.
The profile places it with mid-sized to large omnichannel retailers and D2C brands with complex catalogs, several stores and several regional markets, that build on composable commerce and MACH principles.
Why teams look for a BetterCommerce PIM alternative
- You use only the PIM. The PIM's value is highest inside the suite. If your storefront runs on another platform, compare it with PIMs that are built to stand alone.
- You want proof before you commit. Our analyst assessment is short: evaluate it on deployment effort, standards proof and commercial transparency. Ask for references with a scope like yours.
- You supply retailers or data pools. The profile does not list GS1 or GDSN support, so brands that sell through retailers need to check how product data reaches them.
- You are not a retailer or D2C brand. The profile targets retail and D2C. Manufacturers and wholesalers with technical catalogs should test the data model for their products.
BetterCommerce PIM alternatives at a glance
- Keep BetterCommerce commerce, change the PIM: Akeneo.
- A MACH-certified, API-only PIM: Bluestone PIM.
- PIM, content and commerce in one headless backend: Crystallize.
- A UK cloud PIM with integrated DAM: Pimberly.
- Marketplaces, print and digital shelf analytics: inRiver.
- Brands that sell through large retailers: Syndigo.
- SAP-centric enterprises with complex products: Viamedici.
The alternatives
The seven options are ordered by fit for BetterCommerce's typical buyer, a retailer or D2C brand on a composable stack. Fit and watch-out notes come from the analyst assessment on each profile.
Akeneo
Akeneo is a French, API-first PIM with an open-core heritage, sold as SaaS (Product Cloud). It is sunsetting its open-source Community Edition, so plan for the SaaS product.
It is the most direct swap: our BetterCommerce profile lists out-of-the-box support for Akeneo, so you can keep the storefront and order management and change only the PIM. Our analyst assessment puts its best fit with mid-market and enterprise brands, retailers and wholesalers that prioritize multichannel product experience, composable architecture, enrichment productivity and supplier onboarding.
Check: GS1, ETIM and digital product passport support need explicit proof in a proof of concept, often through a partner. It is not a multidomain MDM.
Bluestone PIM
Bluestone PIM is a Norwegian SaaS PIM built on microservices, with an API-only, MACH-certified architecture.
It fits mid-market and enterprise retailers, manufacturers and distributors that build a composable stack and want the PIM as one component in it. It has native DAM with a CDN, validation rules, completeness scoring, AI for enrichment and translation, and a deep model for variants, bundles and product families.
Check: our analyst advises testing deployment effort, proof of standards support and the commercial terms. Ask for a reference that connects it to your commerce platform.
Crystallize
Crystallize is a Norwegian headless platform that combines PIM, content and commerce behind a GraphQL API, for small and mid-market companies.
It is the closest in spirit to the BetterCommerce suite: one composable backend in which PIM is equal to content and commerce. Our analyst assessment puts its best fit with digital-native D2C and B2B commerce teams that want structured product storytelling, subscriptions, multi-market pricing and custom storefronts, and have engineering capacity. It publishes base pricing tiers.
Check: it is not a pure PIM for architectures where the PIM feeds everything else, and it has no native GDSN, ETIM or marketplace syndication.
Pimberly
Pimberly is a UK cloud PIM with integrated DAM, hosted on AWS, for mid-market and enterprise companies.
It fits retailers, brands and manufacturers with large, multi-category catalogs, localized content and many channels. Its profile lists connectors for Shopify Plus, BigCommerce, Adobe Commerce and Salesforce Commerce Cloud, ERP systems such as SAP, Microsoft Dynamics and NetSuite, and marketplaces such as Amazon, eBay and Google Shopping.
Check: our analyst gives no detailed assessment, only the advice to test deployment effort, standards proof and commercial transparency. Confirm the scope and terms of each connector you need.
inRiver
inRiver is a Swedish SaaS PIM that runs on Microsoft Azure.
It fits manufacturers, brands and wholesalers with complex catalogs and many channels and marketplaces, with print and PDF from the same governed model and digital shelf analytics inside the PIM. It suits a brand whose main growth is on marketplaces rather than its own store.
Check: pricing is quote-only with indexed renewals, so model three to five years. GS1, GDSN and ETIM often run through partner extensions.
Syndigo
Syndigo is a US platform that combines PIM, MDM and content syndication with a large retailer network, and it operates a certified GDSN data pool.
It fits brands that sell through large retailers more than through their own store: enterprise teams in consumer goods, foodservice, health and beauty and hardlines, where retailer compliance and enhanced product page content drive revenue. Our analyst calls it less ideal as a first PIM for a D2C brand without trade-network needs.
Check: authoring and composable commerce APIs are secondary to the network, and the content hub and the Riversand MDM are two integration surfaces.
Viamedici
Viamedici is a German enterprise suite that combines PIM, MDM, DAM and configure-price-quote, sold as SaaS, cloud-hosted or on-premise.
It is a different route: for an enterprise with SAP at the center, configurable or technical products and multilingual print and digital catalogs, that needs governed master data outside SAP. Among BetterCommerce's buyers, it only fits the largest.
Check: our analyst says it is not a lean composable PIM, so budget for suite complexity and integrator costs. That is the opposite of the MACH approach, so be sure that is what you want.
How to choose, and how to switch
Decide what stays in the suite
List which BetterCommerce modules you use and which of them read product data from the PIM. Decide whether you keep the storefront and order management or replace the whole stack.
Write down your requirements
Data model, variants, assets, languages, channels, marketplaces and any retailer or data pool requirements. The PIM RFP guide helps turn them into a request for proposal.
Shortlist three
Keeping the suite points to Akeneo first. Replacing it points to Bluestone PIM, Crystallize or Pimberly. Retailer syndication points to inRiver or Syndigo.
Demo with your own data and storefront
Give each vendor a product family with variants and assets, and ask them to show it in your storefront through the API, not in a slide.
Migrate category by category
Move one category at a time, compare the storefront output with the old PIM, and end the PIM licence only when every channel runs from the new system.

What are the best BetterCommerce PIM alternatives?
For an API-first PIM that BetterCommerce already supports, Akeneo. For a MACH-certified PIM, Bluestone PIM. For PIM and commerce in one headless backend, Crystallize.
