PIM vs PXM vs Syndication Tools: What Do You Need for Retailer Feeds? (2026)

Last updated: 7 November 2026.
For retailer feeds you need a PIM first, because it holds the approved product record every feed is built from. A PXM suite adds channel-specific content and experience on top of that record, and a syndication or feed tool maps the record to each retailer's or marketplace's format and delivers it. A brand with a webshop and a few marketplaces usually gets by with a PIM and its native connectors. A brand or distributor that feeds many retailers and marketplaces adds a feed or syndication tool. A supplier to grocery, health and beauty or DIY retailers adds GDSN through a certified data pool. A brand that wants enhanced content, syndication and digital shelf analytics from one vendor looks at a PXM suite.
This page is the buyer's decision between the three. For the deeper definitions, see what PXM stands for and PIM vs MDM vs DAM vs PXM. For the marketplace side, see PIM and marketplaces.
What does each one do?
| PIM | PXM suite | Syndication or feed tool | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Job | Holds the approved product record: attributes, variants, relations, assets, translations, completeness | PIM plus channel-facing content and insight: enhanced content, syndication, digital shelf analytics | Maps the record to each channel's format, applies channel rules, delivers it and reports what the channel accepted |
| What it owns | The facts about the product | The facts plus how the product is presented per channel | The mapping and delivery rules, not the facts |
| Typical owner | Product data or e-commerce team | E-commerce, brand or digital shelf team | E-commerce, marketplace or performance marketing team |
| Typical buyer | Manufacturers, brands, wholesalers and retailers with more than one channel | Brands selling through many retailers, especially consumer goods | Sellers with many marketplaces, comparison sites, ad channels or retailer portals |
| Examples (by the vendor's own description) | Akeneo, inriver, Pimcore, Plytix, Sales Layer, Ergonode, AtroPIM, WisePIM | Salsify ("PXM Platform"), Centric PXM ("Product Experience Management"), Syndigo ("Product Experience Cloud") | Productsup ("feed management and syndication platform"), Feedonomics ("product data feed management"), ChannelEngine ("marketplace integration") |
The examples column uses each vendor's own wording, checked on its website on 7 November 2026. Several PIMs also syndicate: Akeneo sells Akeneo Activation as a product syndication and channel management solution, inriver sells Syndicate Advance for retailers and marketplaces, Plytix has a feed management module, and AtroPIM and Pimcore describe data syndication on their sites. Pimcore also uses the term product experience management in its menu. We list a vendor under PXM only where its own positioning uses the term as its headline.
The line between the columns is where the master record lives. A PXM suite contains a PIM, so it can be the master. A feed tool should not be: it transforms data for each channel, and a fact corrected only in the feed tool will not reach your webshop, your print catalog or the next retailer.
Do you need all three for retailer feeds?
No. Most companies need one or two layers, and the PIM is almost always one of them. The three questions that decide the rest:
- How many channels do you feed, and how different are their formats? A few stable channels with similar data can run from a PIM's connectors. Many channels, each with its own taxonomy, required attributes and update rhythm, need a tool built for mapping and delivery.
- Do your retailers require GDSN? If they do, you need a certified data pool, whatever else you buy.
- Do you want channel content and shelf analytics from the same vendor as your PIM? If yes, a PXM suite or a PIM vendor's own syndication module fits. If you prefer best-of-breed, keep the PIM and add a separate tool.
When is a PIM with native connectors enough?
When the channel list is short and stable, and the formats are close to your own data model. Typical cases are a brand with its own Shopify or Adobe Commerce store plus a few marketplaces, or a B2B manufacturer with a webshop and a handful of distributor portals. Most PIMs ship connectors or apps for the big commerce platforms, and many reach marketplaces through an app from a partner, such as the ChannelEngine connector in the Akeneo app store.
The PIM-only setup starts to strain when you see these signs:
- Your team spends more time on per-channel mapping than on product content.
- Retailers or marketplaces reject listings often, and you only find out from their reports.
- Each new channel means a development ticket, not a configuration.
- You need different titles, images or bullet points per channel, and the PIM's channel scopes are getting crowded.
At that point a feed or syndication tool next to the PIM is the usual next step. Our sister site pimselection.com explains where a PIM stops and a feed tool starts in more depth.
When do you need a syndication network or GDSN?
GDSN, the Global Data Synchronisation Network, is run by GS1. GS1 describes it as the world's largest product data network: a company that needs to send or receive product information subscribes to a certified data pool, and the pool synchronises its product content with all its trading partners (GS1, checked 7 November 2026). GS1 lists five steps: loading the company's data into its data pool, registering it, the retailer's subscription to the seller's data, publishing, and a confirmation of receipt (GS1, how GDSN works). The data follows the GS1 Global Data Model, and GS1 publishes the GDSN standard in numbered releases; the latest listed on 7 November 2026 is 3.1.36, from August 2026 (GS1 GDSN standards).
You need GDSN when your retailers ask for it. That is common in grocery, health and beauty, DIY and healthcare, where retailers receive item data through their own data pool rather than through supplier uploads. You do not need it for most marketplaces, fashion platforms or consumer electronics retailers, which use their own APIs, portals or file formats.
A syndication network is a different thing: a vendor's own set of connections to retailers, often with validation against each retailer's requirements. Salsify, Syndigo and 1WorldSync run such networks and are also certified GDSN data pools.
| Vendor | Certified GDSN data pool on GS1's list | Own syndication offer | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Salsify | Yes (Salsify Data Pool; also listed with its Alkemics platform) | Yes | GS1 list, Salsify GDSN |
| Syndigo | Yes (Syndigo Data Pool) | Yes | GS1 list, Syndigo GDSN |
| 1WorldSync | Yes (listed as 1WorldSync, by Syndigo, and as 1WorldSync GmbH) | Yes | GS1 list, 1WorldSync GDSN |
| Centric PXM | Not on the list | Yes, content syndication and feed management | Centric PXM syndication |
| Akeneo | Not on the list | Yes, Akeneo Activation | Akeneo Activation |
| inriver | Not on the list | Yes, Syndicate Advance | inriver Syndicate Advance |
Not being a data pool does not mean a PIM cannot deliver to GDSN. Many PIMs hand data to a data pool through a connector or a partner. Ask which data pool the PIM connects to, who maintains the connection and which GDSN release it supports. GS1 member organisations also run data pools, such as GS1 Netherlands with GS1 Data Source, which is often the route for suppliers to Dutch retailers.
When is a feed tool enough without a PIM?
When the catalog is simple and the main job is getting the same data into many channels. A small webshop with one language, a few product families, one team and no supplier files to onboard can run feeds straight from its commerce platform into a feed tool. The feed tool fixes titles, maps categories and filters products per channel.
It stops being enough when any of these appear: suppliers sending data in their own formats, more than one language, an approval step before publication, regulatory attributes that must be correct everywhere, or a second team editing product content. Those are PIM jobs. If you notice people correcting product facts inside the feed tool, that is the moment to bring in a PIM, because the corrections never reach your own webshop.
Decision table: your situation, then what to buy
| Your situation | What to buy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Own webshop plus one or two marketplaces, one language | PIM with native connectors, or a feed tool alone if the catalog is simple | Few formats, little mapping work |
| Brand selling on several marketplaces in several countries | PIM plus a feed or marketplace integration tool | The PIM owns content and translations; the tool owns mapping, delivery and channel feedback |
| Supplier to grocery, health and beauty, DIY or healthcare retailers | PIM plus GDSN through a certified data pool | Retailers receive item data by subscription to your data pool |
| Consumer goods brand selling through many retailers that want enhanced content and shelf analytics | PXM suite (for example Salsify, Syndigo or Centric PXM), or a PIM with its vendor's syndication module | One vendor for record, syndication network and analytics |
| Distributor sending data to many retailer portals with strict validation | PIM plus a syndication platform with retailer validation | Validation against each retailer's requirements before delivery |
| Catalog of a few hundred products, one team, many ad and comparison channels | Feed tool alone | No enrichment workflow or supplier onboarding to manage |
| PIM already in place, rejections rising | Add a feed or syndication tool; do not replace the PIM | The bottleneck is delivery, not the record |
For marketplaces specifically (Amazon, Zalando, bol.com), our guide to PIM and marketplaces compares PIMs and integrators channel by channel. For classification standards that often travel in the same feeds, see GS1, ETIM, ECLASS and BMEcat in a PIM. For Syndigo's position after it acquired 1WorldSync, see Syndigo's acquisition of 1WorldSync.
How we evaluated
We started from the vendors that buyers and AI answers name when they compare PIM, PXM and syndication tools for retailer feeds. For each vendor we opened its own website on 7 November 2026 and recorded how it describes itself and whether it offers syndication or GDSN. We list a vendor as PXM only where its own headline positioning uses the term. Facts about GDSN come from gs1.org, and data pool certification from GS1's own list of certified data pools, not from vendor claims. We left out retailer and channel counts that vendors publish, because we could not check them. Channable is a well-known feed tool in this space, but its website did not open for our tools on 7 November 2026, so it is not in the tables.
Our sister sites cover parts of this topic in more depth: pimselection.com on product data syndication, PIM vs feed management and PXM in the glossary, and PXM Atlas on product data syndication.
PIMvendors is an independent PIM selection platform. Positioning and certification change, so check the current situation with the vendor and on GS1's list before you decide.

Frequently asked questions
What do I need for retailer feeds, a PIM, a PXM or a syndication tool?
Start from a PIM: it holds the approved product record that every feed is built from. Add a syndication or feed tool when you deliver to many retailers or marketplaces, each with its own format and rules, and mapping or rejections take more time than the PIM's own connectors can absorb. Add GDSN through a certified data pool when your retailers require it, which is common in grocery, health and beauty and DIY. A PXM suite bundles PIM with channel content, syndication and shelf analytics; buy it when you want those from one vendor.
Can a PIM replace a feed tool?
For a handful of stable channels, often yes: many PIMs export to marketplaces and webshops through their own connectors or apps. A PIM is weaker at the work a feed tool is built for: per-channel rules, optimised titles, category mapping that keeps up with channel changes, and acceptance reports from each channel. Once that work grows, a feed tool next to the PIM is usually cheaper than building it inside the PIM.
Can a feed tool replace a PIM?
Only for a simple catalog: one language, few product families, one team and no supplier data to onboard. A feed tool transforms and ships data, but it is not built for enrichment workflows, approvals, translations or supplier onboarding. If you correct facts inside the feed tool, you end up with two masters that drift apart.
Do I need GDSN for retailer feeds?
Only if your retailers require it. GDSN is GS1's network of certified data pools: you load and register your product data in a data pool, and the retailer receives it through its own data pool by subscription. Many grocery, health and beauty and DIY retailers ask for it. Fashion, electronics and most marketplaces use their own formats and APIs instead.
Is PXM just a new name for PIM?
Partly. Product experience management is a positioning label that vendors such as Salsify and Centric Software use for a PIM plus features aimed at how products appear in channels: enhanced content, syndication and digital shelf analytics. It is not a standard. Judge a PXM product as a PIM first, and list each extra capability as a separate requirement.
Which vendors are certified GDSN data pools?
On GS1's list of certified data pools, checked on 7 November 2026, we found Salsify, Syndigo and 1WorldSync (listed as 1WorldSync, by Syndigo) among the PIM and PXM vendors, next to GS1 member organisations such as GS1 Netherlands with GS1 Data Source. We did not find Akeneo, inriver, Pimcore, Plytix, Sales Layer, Centric Software, Ergonode, AtroPIM or WisePIM on that list.
