What W23's Five Grocery Bets Ask of Product Data
- 01Fund
- 02Stack
- 03Agent
- 04PIM
W23 Global's five new bets are a specification for grocery product data, not a tour of consumer apps. On 21 July 2026 Ahold Delhaize reported that the fund, backed by five grocery retailers, had invested in Moment Energy, Verse, Skyfire, Haast and Cresta: circular energy, energy data, a trust layer for shopping agents, marketing compliance, and contact-centre AI. A PIM that only stores descriptions will not plug into that stack.
The release is the source for who was funded and what each company does. The reading below, what this asks of a product record, is ours. AI-ready product data is the buyer version of the agent half. The commerce stack guide is where energy, price, stock and the product record have to meet without five owners.
Who is behind the fund
W23 Global is a grocery venture fund backed by Tesco (UK, Republic of Ireland, Europe), Ahold Delhaize (United States, Europe, Indonesia), Woolworths Group (Australia, New Zealand), Shoprite Group (Africa) and Empire Company Limited (Canada). The release says the fund backs technology with practical application across markets, and with a sustainability brief. When that set of retailers shares a portfolio, the systems they trial have a path to become ordinary infrastructure. Other verticals usually inherit grocery's constraints later, with fewer of them: perishable goods, thin margins, hard logistics, strict rules.
The five bets
Moment Energy
Moment Energy builds battery storage from second-life electric-vehicle batteries. The release calls it the first company in North America to manufacture certified, commercial-scale systems of that kind, aimed at grocery infrastructure (stores, distribution centres, microgrids) and at data centres, hospitals and factories. Ingrid Maes, CEO and chief investment officer of W23, ties it to backup power and lower peak-demand utility cost.
For a product record the implication is narrow and real. Energy is becoming an operating variable, not a facilities invoice. Cold-chain attributes, storage constraints, shelf life and environmental data are what an energy system would need from the catalog if anyone ever asks which range is expensive to chill this week. A PIM that cannot hold those fields cannot answer.
Verse
Verse's Aria platform centralises utility bills, contracts and power purchase agreements across thousands of sites, so a retailer can compare forecast and actual use. Dispatch Intelligence orchestrates on-site energy resources in real time, which the release links to bringing AI infrastructure online on a constrained grid.
Utility data is not product data. It becomes a neighbour of product data the moment a promotion, a chilled range or a local production plan depends on power. The record has to carry stable identifiers and hierarchies those systems can join to. Product data quality and governance is the unglamorous half: if the identifier is dirty, the join fails and the energy insight never reaches the assortment.
Skyfire
Skyfire is building identity and payments so a retailer can tell a trusted shopping agent from malicious automation. The release describes verified "Know Your Agent" credentials and integrated payments, so digital channels can open to autonomous shoppers without handing the API to every bot.
Once that door exists, the customer on the product API may be a piece of software. It will expect ingredients, allergens, packaging, substitution rules and availability in a form it can read, and it will not wait on a half-filled record. What you expose, on what terms, and how fresh it is, becomes part of the product contract. Skyfire does not do that content work. It makes the absence of the content expensive.
Haast
Haast, founded in 2023, checks marketing compliance and brand protection across text, images, video and audio, from review before publication through monitoring of live channels. The release frames it as time and risk for marketing, legal and compliance teams.
Product content is a large share of that surface: claims, nutrition, sustainability badges, price language. Generative tools widen it. A check bolted on after publication finds the problem in public. The workflow that approves a value in the PIM is the earlier gate. Expect shortlists to ask for an audit trail and for a way to plug a checker in, whether the checker is Haast or something like it.
Cresta
Cresta combines autonomous agents in the contact centre with live coaching for people, and turns conversations into assistance. The release says the technology is in use at over 80 businesses. It traces the company to the Stanford AI Lab and to a co-founder of Google's AI contact-centre work. Maes's comment in the release is about service economics: faster, more consistent customer experience, at a better cost.
For the product record, the contact centre is where bad data is already visible. Wrong attributes, missing compatibility, unclear allergens, confusing price. A system that can turn repeated questions into a structured change in the PIM closes a loop most catalogs never have. That loop is a reading of why Cresta is in this portfolio. The release itself does not promise a PIM connector.
What a PIM buyer should take from the list
Put side by side, the five investments describe a grocery stack that assumes the product record is structured, current, governed and joinable.
- Agents and checkers have to be able to consume the record. A copy assistant on top of messy fields does not meet Skyfire's shopper or Haast's review.
- Identifiers have to survive a join to energy, service and commerce systems. An island PIM gets worked around.
- Approval, versioning and a named owner move up the list, because generated content raises the cost of a wrong claim.
- Nightly batch and a manual queue will not match agents, live energy dispatch or a contact centre that is already talking to the customer.
- Sustainability fields belong on the product, not in a side report, once energy and circularity are operating constraints.
The grocery aisle looks plain next to fashion. Shipping a yogurt, at scale, within the rules, is not plain. W23's portfolio says the companies working on that problem are setting tests other retailers, and PIM vendors, will be judged by.
