Tesco Replaces the Barcode on 13 Sausage Lines

Tesco is replacing the barcode with a QR code on 13 lines of its own-brand sausages. The till still reads the code as the product identity. A phone can open extra product information from the same square. The code is only as good as the record it opens.

The Independent, 17 April 2026, reported the change. Tesco called it a first among UK supermarkets. The 13 lines include Tesco Pork Sausages, Tesco Pork Chipolatas, Tesco British Pork Sausage Meat, British Cumberland Sausages and British Lincolnshire Sausages. The report does not give a store count.

Customers pay the same way, according to Peter Draper, Tesco's development and change director. The new option is the phone. Nutrition, traceability, recipes and competitions are the examples the report gives. Tesco said the codes should improve ordering, stock control and food waste. No figure is attached to any of the three. Draper also described a later direction: personalised tools that help customers manage food at home. That is a direction, not a measured feature.

The operational point is the recall. The report says a QR code lets the retailer identify a batch instead of pulling the whole line, block the affected item at the till, and contact customers who bought it. That works when the batch on the pack is a batch the till and the customer record can both see. One static product card cannot name the batch.

Anne Godfrey, chief executive of GS1 UK, said Tesco is moving to QR codes powered by GS1 across this range. She described them as the next generation of barcodes, carrying richer product information. How a GTIN, a batch and a resolved page fit in a PIM is covered in product classification and GS1.

Two decisions follow from putting that code on a pack. Who may change the nutrition or the origin the code opens, and how fast a batch recall reaches the till. Batch data often sits in the supply system, while the page the shopper opens sits with product content. Where ERP stops and PIM starts is that boundary. Product data quality and governance is who may change the claim the code resolves to, and how the change is audited. The commerce stack is the rest of the path: the till, the product record and the page are three systems, and the QR code is the front door.

The trade-off is a live promise. A code that opens a page has to keep opening the right page years later, including on the day of a recall. Printing the square is the small part.
