Novulo Alternatives: 7 PIM Solutions to Compare

· 2026-10-11 · 10 min read

Novulo comes up in Dutch and European selections when an organization wants one adaptable system instead of a stack of separate tools. Teams that run it look at alternatives when the product content work grows, when a new commerce or ERP project starts, or when they want a PIM they do not have to build. This guide covers what Novulo is, why teams look elsewhere, seven alternatives and how to switch.

What Novulo is and who it fits

Novulo is a Dutch software company, founded in 2008. According to our Novulo profile, it sells a composable, low-code platform with PIM functions alongside MDM, DAM and process management, as SaaS, cloud-hosted or on-premise. Organizations change data structures, workflows and integrations through visual modeling instead of classic development.

Our analyst assessment places the best fit with European mid-market and enterprise organizations that want a composed operational backbone (ERP, commerce, portals) in which product catalog, channel assortment, pricing, stock and web content live in one adaptable system, and that accept project-specific PIM depth, often with an integrator. Strong fits are automotive wholesale, complex retail and PIM projects of the kind the integrator SQLI runs, with wins outside PIM in insurance and aviation. Its strengths are composability, changes without classic development projects, documented event patterns for product changes, a headless CMS linked to products, a sales channel model, and dealer and B2B portals.

The analyst is also clear about what it is not: a standalone PIM. Its MDM, DAM and PIM components are base modules rather than specialist products, and they may need partner work to match a specialist PIM.

PIM, ERP and MDM: which jobs does Novulo do for you?

That is the first question in any search for a Novulo alternative. If Novulo runs your operational processes and you only need better product content, you add or swap a PIM. If you replace the whole backbone, you also need a home for pricing, stock and portals. Our guide on where ERP stops and PIM starts helps draw that line.

Why teams look for a Novulo alternative

  • A marketing-led team needs a PIM. The analyst calls Novulo not a quick standalone PIM replacement for product experience teams led by marketing. Enrichment for many channels, completeness and supplier onboarding are the core of a dedicated PIM.
  • PIM depth is built per project. If you want PIM functions out of the box rather than configured with an integrator, a specialist PIM fits better.
  • Master data claims need proof. The profile advises reading the MDM capability as product-centric master data unless a proof of concept shows golden-record depth in other domains.
  • Separate specialist systems. Some organizations prefer a separate ERP, commerce platform and PIM over one composed backbone, so each can be replaced on its own schedule.

Novulo alternatives at a glance

  • Pimcore: best for another adaptable platform, with dedicated PIM, MDM, DAM, CMS and commerce modules.
  • Bluestone PIM: best for a dedicated SaaS PIM in a composable stack.
  • novomind iPIM: best for complex retail and wholesale with many suppliers.
  • Contentserv: best for marketing-led product experience with PIM and DAM in one product.
  • Viamedici: best for SAP-centric manufacturers that need governed master data and configurable products.
  • Crystallize: best for direct-to-consumer and B2B commerce teams that build their own storefronts.
  • Syndigo: best for brands and suppliers whose main channel is large retailers.

The alternatives

The seven options are ordered by how close they come to what Novulo buyers look for. Founding years, headquarters and the fit and watch-out notes come from each system's vendor profile.

Pimcore

Pimcore is an Austrian open-core platform, founded in 2010, that combines PIM, MDM, DAM, a customer data platform, CMS and digital commerce on one data layer, self-hosted, in a private cloud or as managed PaaS.

  • Where it differs from Novulo: it is the closest to Novulo's idea of one adaptable platform, but with dedicated modules for product, asset and content data rather than composed process components. Our analyst fits it to mid-market and enterprise manufacturers, brands and retailers in Europe with a technical team or integrator budget. Check which of the processes Novulo runs for you, such as pricing and stock, Pimcore would take over.
  • Check: open-core is not free at enterprise scale: the profile states the Community edition is free only for companies under €5 million in annual revenue, and CDP and commerce need the Enterprise edition. Ownership is also changing; see our Pimcore alternatives.

Bluestone PIM

Bluestone PIM is a Norwegian SaaS PIM, founded in 2013, built on microservices with an API-only, MACH-certified architecture.

  • Where it differs from Novulo: it is a dedicated PIM meant to sit next to your ERP and commerce platform, not to replace them. The profile targets mid-market and enterprise manufacturers, distributors and omnichannel retailers with large catalogs, variants, bundles and configurable products, with validation rules, completeness scoring, role-based workflows and AI for content and translation.
  • Check: our analyst asks you to test deployment effort, proof of standards support and commercial transparency. It runs as SaaS or cloud-hosted, and the profile lists no on-premise option.

novomind iPIM

novomind iPIM is a German PIM from novomind AG, founded in 2000, sold as SaaS, cloud-hosted or on-premise.

  • Where it differs from Novulo: it targets complex retail and wholesale, one of Novulo's strong fits, with a dedicated PIM. Our analyst fits it to mid-size and large European retailers, wholesalers and buying cooperatives with hundreds of supplier catalogs, governed supplier onboarding, BPMN workflows, native DAM and print. novomind also sells a shop system (iSHOP) and a marketplace product (iMARKET).
  • Check: syndication and real-time scenarios often assume iMARKET and iSHOP, and its GDSN certification emphasizes receiving data rather than publishing it. See our novomind iPIM alternatives.

Contentserv

Contentserv is a PIM and product experience vendor, founded in 2006, with headquarters in Switzerland and Germany, sold as SaaS, cloud-hosted or on-premise. In February 2025 Centric Software, the PLM vendor owned by Dassault Systèmes, announced it would acquire Contentserv.

  • Where it differs from Novulo: it serves the marketing-led product experience team the analyst says Novulo does not quickly serve: PIM and DAM in one product, supplier onboarding with golden-record patterns for product data, industrial classification and high-volume feed syndication. Our analyst fits it to mid-market and enterprise European manufacturers, brands and retailers.
  • Check: ask about roadmap and support continuity under Centric. It does not replace a domain-agnostic MDM for customer or finance data, and pricing and stock processes are outside the scope its profile describes.

Viamedici

Viamedici is a German vendor, founded in 1996, that sells an enterprise suite for PIM, MDM, DAM and product configuration (CPQ), as SaaS, cloud-hosted or on-premise.

  • Where it differs from Novulo: where Novulo's MDM is product-centric unless proven otherwise, Viamedici offers multi-domain MDM with a golden record and a supplier portal. Our analyst fits it to SAP-centric manufacturers and industrial distributors with complex configurable products, multilingual print and digital catalogs, and ETIM and ECLASS requirements.
  • Check: it is not a lean composable PIM, so plan for suite complexity and integrator cost, and evidence for GDSN and GS1 retail syndication is thin. It targets enterprises only.

Crystallize

Crystallize is a Norwegian headless PIM and commerce backend, founded in 2017, sold as SaaS to small and mid-market companies.

  • Where it differs from Novulo: like Novulo, it links product data to web content and commerce, but as a hosted GraphQL backend for teams that build their own storefronts. Our analyst fits it to digital-native direct-to-consumer or B2B commerce teams with engineers available, and notes configurator and bill-of-materials patterns in its product model. Base pricing tiers are published.
  • Check: it is not a PIM for ERP-centric catalog operations, and it has no native GDSN, ETIM or marketplace syndication, and the profile lists no on-premise option.

Syndigo

Syndigo is a US platform that combines PIM, MDM, DAM and content syndication with a large network of retailers, built through acquisitions such as Riversand (MDM) and 1WorldSync.

  • Where it differs from Novulo: it solves a different job: getting validated content to each retailer's requirements, with Syndigo acting as a GDSN operator. Our analyst fits it to enterprise teams in consumer goods, foodservice, health and beauty, hardlines and retail vendor management. For a Novulo user in wholesale or hardlines that supplies large retailers, that is the overlap.
  • Check: authoring and composable commerce APIs are secondary to the network, and the content hub and the Riversand MDM are two integration surfaces, so plan an architecture review.

How to choose and switch

  1. Map the processes Novulo runs

List what runs in Novulo today: product catalog, channel assortment, pricing, stock, web content, portals and the integrations between them. Mark which of these you want to replace and which you want to keep.

  2. Turn it into requirements and a shortlist

Decide whether you want another platform or a dedicated PIM next to what stays, and pick three vendors that match. The PIM RFP guide helps write the requirements.

  3. Demo with your own data

Give each vendor one product family, with variants, prices per channel and one channel export, and ask them to show it in a scripted demo, including how data flows back to the systems that stay.

  4. Migrate in slices with a parallel run

Move one product family or one channel at a time, and compare the output of Novulo and the new setup until they match.

  5. Settle the contract last

Align the switch with your Novulo agreement and any integrator contracts, and check renewal terms and exit clauses in the new contract before you sign.

Frequently asked questions

What is Novulo?

Novulo is a Dutch software company, founded in 2008, that sells a composable low-code platform. Organizations use it to build an operational backbone in which product catalog, channel assortment, pricing, stock, web content and portals live in one adaptable system. It runs as SaaS, cloud-hosted or on-premise.

Is Novulo a PIM system?

Not in the narrow sense. Novulo offers PIM functions inside a broader platform. Our analyst assessment states that it is not a standalone PIM and that PIM depth is project-specific, often built with an integrator, so test the PIM functions you need in a proof of concept.

What are the best Novulo alternatives?

Pimcore if you want another adaptable platform, Bluestone PIM, novomind iPIM and Contentserv if you want a dedicated PIM, Viamedici for MDM and PIM in an SAP landscape, Crystallize for product data and commerce in one headless backend, and Syndigo if retailer syndication is the job.

When is Novulo still the right choice?

When you want catalog, assortment, pricing, stock and web content in one system you can change without classic development projects, for example in automotive wholesale, complex retail or with dealer and B2B portals, and you accept that PIM depth is built per project.

What is the difference between Novulo and Pimcore?

Both are platforms you can adapt and host where you like. Novulo is a low-code platform for operational processes, with PIM as one part. Pimcore is an open-core data platform with dedicated PIM, MDM, DAM, CMS and commerce modules. Pimcore leans to product, asset and content data; Novulo leans to the processes around them.

Do you need a separate PIM next to Novulo?

If a marketing-led team needs enrichment for many channels, supplier onboarding or digital shelf work, a dedicated PIM next to Novulo is often simpler than building those functions in the platform. Novulo then keeps the operational processes and the PIM owns product content.

How do you move product data off Novulo?

Map which processes Novulo runs, decide where each one goes, export and clean the product data model, migrate one product family or channel at a time with a parallel run, and switch off the Novulo components only when every integration and channel runs from the new setup.
