Pimberly Alternatives: 7 PIM Solutions to Compare

· 2026-10-11 · Updated 2026-10-12 · 9 min read

Pimberly shows up on shortlists of retailers and brands that want product data and digital assets in one cloud platform. Teams that already run it reopen the decision at a contract renewal, when a new commerce stack arrives, or when their requirements move past what they bought it for. This guide covers what Pimberly is, why teams look for an alternative, and seven PIM systems to compare, each with what to check.

What Pimberly is and who it fits

Pimberly is a UK software company, founded in 2015, that sells a cloud-native PIM and DAM built on AWS, as SaaS or cloud-hosted. According to our Pimberly profile, the platform covers:

  • PIM and DAM in one platform: product data plus assets such as images, PDFs and video.
  • Data modeling: relationships between products, variants, categories and attributes.
  • AI-assisted enrichment: automation that fills gaps and prepares content for publication.
  • Channel management and localization: content per channel, language and audience.

The profile places Pimberly with medium to large companies in B2B and B2C retail, distribution and manufacturing, especially those with complex product data, international operations and many sales channels. It integrates with ERP, CMS, e-commerce and DAM platforms.

Why teams look for a Pimberly alternative

The analyst assessment on our profile is short: evaluate Pimberly against deployment effort, proof of standards support and commercial transparency. Those three points, and the profile itself, give the usual reasons to compare:

  • Deployment effort. If the rollout plan or the internal effort does not fit your timeline, compare it with systems quoted for the same scope.
  • Standards. The profile does not list GS1, GDSN or ETIM support. If your retailers or wholesalers require them, ask for proof, or look at a system that operates them.
  • Commercial terms. Without a clear multi-year price, you cannot compare the total cost.
  • Master data beyond products. Pimberly is PIM and DAM. Customer, supplier or location data, or a product configurator, point to an MDM suite.
  • Scale and architecture. Pimberly is aimed at the mid-market and enterprise. A smaller direct-to-consumer team that builds its own storefront may be better served by a headless commerce backend.

None of this says Pimberly does a poor job. It shows where to look harder before you renew or buy.

Pimberly alternatives at a glance

  • Akeneo: the closest like-for-like option, an API-first PIM with DAM and supplier onboarding for brands, retailers and wholesalers.
  • inRiver: complex catalogs, many channels, print and PDF from the same model, and digital shelf analytics.
  • Bluestone PIM: a composable, API-only stack with large catalogs and complex variants.
  • BetterCommerce PIM: retailers that want PIM as part of a suite with e-commerce, order management and CMS.
  • Syndigo: brands whose revenue depends on retailer compliance, GDSN and enhanced content.
  • Viamedici: SAP-centric manufacturers with configurable products and print catalogs, with an on-premise option.
  • Crystallize: direct-to-consumer and B2B teams that build their own storefront and have engineers.

The alternatives

The order follows fit for typical Pimberly buyers, starting with the closest match. Fit and check notes come from each system's profile.

Akeneo

Akeneo is a French PIM, founded in 2013, sold as SaaS (Product Cloud); it is sunsetting its open-source Community Edition. It puts the product record, completeness scoring and enrichment work first, with a native DAM for product assets and a supplier data onboarding product.

  • Fits better when: you are a mid-market or enterprise brand, retailer or wholesaler that puts multi-channel product experience, an API-first architecture and supplier onboarding first. Akeneo also serves smaller companies, which Pimberly does not target.
  • Check: it does not replace a multi-domain MDM, and GS1, ETIM or digital product passport support needs proof in a proof of concept, often through a partner. More in our Akeneo alternatives.

inRiver

inRiver is a Swedish SaaS PIM on Microsoft Azure, founded in 2007, with syndication and digital shelf analytics as core features.

  • Fits better when: you are a manufacturer, brand or wholesaler with a complex catalog, many channels and marketplaces, and print or PDF output that must come from the same governed model as your digital channels.
  • Check: pricing is quote-only with indexed renewals, so model three to five years of cost. GS1, GDSN and ETIM are often partner extensions. See our inRiver alternatives.

Bluestone PIM

Bluestone PIM is a Norwegian SaaS PIM, founded in 2013, built on microservices with an API-only, MACH-certified architecture.

  • Fits better when: you run or plan a composable commerce stack and manage large catalogs with variant groups, product families, bundles and many relations. It includes a native DAM with a CDN, and AI tools for enrichment and translation.
  • Check: our analyst gives it the same three test points as Pimberly: deployment effort, proof of standards support and commercial terms. That makes a like-for-like comparison straightforward: run both through the same scripted demo.

BetterCommerce PIM

BetterCommerce PIM is a UK PIM, founded in 2015, sold as SaaS or cloud-hosted as part of the BetterCommerce suite with e-commerce, order management, CMS and analytics.

  • Fits better when: you are a mid-size or large omnichannel retailer or direct-to-consumer brand with several stores and regional markets, and you want to add commerce modules from the same vendor step by step.
  • Check: how the PIM works if you keep your current shop and order management system. Our analyst names the same three test points as for Pimberly: deployment effort, standards and commercial terms.

Syndigo

Syndigo is a Chicago-based platform that combines PIM, MDM, DAM and content syndication with a network of retailers. It is also a certified GDSN data pool.

  • Fits better when: you are an enterprise brand in consumer goods, foodservice, health and beauty or hardlines, and retailer compliance, GDSN and enhanced product page content drive your revenue.
  • Check: it is not a classic PIM. Authoring and composable APIs are secondary to network compliance, and the content hub and the Riversand MDM are two integration surfaces. Our analyst calls it less suited as a first PIM for a direct-to-consumer brand. See Syndigo vs competitors.

Viamedici

Viamedici is a German vendor, founded in 1996, that sells MDM, PIM, DAM and a product configurator as one suite to large enterprises, as SaaS, cloud-hosted or on-premise.

  • Fits better when: you are a manufacturer or industrial distributor that runs SAP, sells complex configurable products, produces print and digital catalogs in several languages, and needs ETIM or ECLASS and a governed golden record outside SAP.
  • Check: it is not a lean composable PIM, so budget for suite complexity and integrator cost. Evidence for GDSN and GS1 retail syndication is thin.

Crystallize

Crystallize is a Norwegian headless commerce backend, founded in 2017, that combines PIM, content and commerce behind a GraphQL API.

  • Fits better when: you are a smaller direct-to-consumer or B2B team that builds its own storefront, sells subscriptions or prices per market, and has engineers available. Its base pricing tiers are published.
  • Check: it is not a pure PIM for catalog operations around an ERP, and it has no native GDSN, ETIM or marketplace syndication. If marketplaces matter, budget for custom work or a feed tool.

How to choose and switch

  1. Write down what Pimberly does for you

List your channels and connectors, workflows and approvals, the ERP, CMS and e-commerce integrations, and the assets in the DAM. Mark what is a must-have and what nobody uses.

  2. Shortlist three systems by need

The reason you are looking decides the shortlist, so start from the list above. The PIM RFP guide helps turn your inventory into requirements.

  3. Demo with your own data

Give each vendor one real product family with variants, assets and two channels. Let the people who enrich product content score the work, and ask each vendor to show deployment effort and standards support, not describe them.

  4. Migrate in slices

Move product data and assets as separate work packages, one product family or channel at a time, and compare the output of Pimberly and the new system until it matches.

  5. Settle the contract last

Compare three to five years of cost on the same basis, using our PIM cost comparison, and set the switch-off date by your notice period.

Frequently asked questions

What is Pimberly?

Pimberly is a UK software company, founded in 2015, that sells a cloud PIM with a built-in DAM. It runs as SaaS or cloud-hosted and is aimed at mid-market and enterprise retailers, brands, distributors and manufacturers that manage large catalogs and publish to many websites, marketplaces and partners.

What are the best Pimberly alternatives?

It depends on why you are looking. Akeneo is the closest like-for-like option for brands and retailers. inRiver fits complex catalogs with print and digital shelf analytics, Bluestone PIM a composable, API-only stack, and BetterCommerce PIM a retailer that wants PIM inside a commerce suite. Syndigo covers retailer networks and GDSN, Viamedici SAP-centric manufacturing, and Crystallize direct-to-consumer brands with their own storefront.

How much does Pimberly cost?

Our Pimberly profile does not list prices, and our analyst names commercial transparency as one of three points to test. Ask for a written quote that covers three to five years, including users, connectors, implementation and support, and compare every alternative on the same basis.

Can Pimberly syndicate product data to Amazon, Shopify and other channels?

Pimberly's profile lists channel management: product information tailored to each channel's format, language and audience, published to websites, marketplaces and partners. It does not name individual connectors. Ask which of your channels run through a native connector and which through a partner or a feed tool, and test two of them with your own data.

Does Pimberly include a DAM?

Yes. Pimberly manages product data and media such as images, PDFs and video in one platform. If you switch, decide where your assets will live. Akeneo, Bluestone PIM, BetterCommerce PIM, Viamedici and Syndigo all include DAM features, but the depth differs, so plan the asset migration as its own work package.

What is the difference between Pimberly and Akeneo?

Both are PIMs with DAM features for brands, retailers and wholesalers that publish to many channels. Akeneo is French and API-first, is sunsetting its Community Edition and sells a paid SaaS product, has a supplier data onboarding product, and also serves smaller companies. Pimberly is a UK SaaS platform aimed at the mid-market and enterprise. Compare them on enrichment work with your own data, the connectors you need and the total cost.

Is there a Pimberly alternative for SAP-centric manufacturers?

Viamedici. It is a German suite of MDM, PIM, DAM and a product configurator for manufacturers and industrial distributors with complex configurable products, SAP, and print and digital catalogs in several languages. Budget for suite complexity and integrator cost: it is not a lean composable PIM.

How do you switch from Pimberly to another PIM?

List what Pimberly does today, including channels, workflows, integrations and assets. Shortlist three systems by need, run demos with one of your own product families, migrate product data and assets as separate work packages, run old and new in parallel per channel, and plan the end date around your contract's notice period.
