Censhare Under DuMont: From Founder-Owned Vendor to Part of Entirely
Stephan Spijkers · 2026-10-22 · 6 min read

DuMont, the family-owned media group from Cologne, took control of Censhare in January 2019, after buying a 36.5% stake in 2017. Since July 2025 Censhare has been part of Entirely AG, the marketing technology company DuMont set up in Baar, Switzerland, to hold Censhare, Marmind, Elaine and Facelift. The terms of the 2017 and 2019 deals were not disclosed.
The control deal is more than seven years old, but it explains how Censhare is sold today. Censhare is now one product in a marketing technology group, and that matters if you are comparing it with PIM suites that are owned by a PLM vendor, an ERP add-on company or a private equity fund.
How DuMont bought Censhare
Censhare started in Munich in 2001 as CoWare AG and took the name censhare AG in 2008. Before DuMont arrived it was founder-led. In 2017 CEO and co-founder Dieter Reichert said the company had grown organically to 200 people across half a dozen countries on two continents.
In May 2017 Censhare announced the completion of a growth equity investment from DuMont, subject to approval by the German antitrust authorities. The money was meant to fund a larger sales, marketing and support operation, with North America and Asia Pacific named, and more research and development. DuMont had just taken 75% of Facelift, a social media marketing software company. DuMont CEO Christoph Bauer described the investment as a step that made DuMont "an attractive provider of Marketing Cloud Services."
On 31 January 2019 DuMont announced that it had raised its holding to a controlling interest. Censhare's release puts the first stake at 36.5%. KPMG Law, which advised DuMont on both steps, said the Federal Cartel Office cleared the deal and that Censhare's corporate governance was realigned. At that point Censhare employed more than 280 people in seven countries. Patrick Wölke, then managing director of DuMont Marketing Technology, called Censhare "an important building block" next to Facelift. Co-founder Robert Motzke, by then on the supervisory board, said DuMont's support would fund further expansion.

What has happened since
The company structure changed first. In October 2020 censhare AG became censhare GmbH, and Reichert had already left the executive board in September 2018, according to the commercial register. Esther Donatz led Censhare until September 2023, when Tobias Ackermann took over as CEO. He came from Oracle, where he ran applications sales for Switzerland and Austria, and from Sage before that. At the handover Censhare gave its size as about 200 employees and about 350 customers, mostly enterprises. That is roughly 80 fewer staff than at the 2019 deal.
The product moved to a managed cloud. On 18 January 2024 Censhare launched Censhare Cloud, built on the existing Censhare Classic and hosted in Censhare's own data centre in Germany. It added low-code workflow orchestration, Git-based customisation and monitoring, and Censhare said Classic customers would keep receiving regular updates. In November 2025 Censhare and Marmind added a portal module licensed from Smint.io for brand portals, media download portals and sales enablement applications. In April 2026 Censhare and Blue Lucy showed an integration that connects Censhare's DAM with Blue Lucy's video workflow platform.
The group around Censhare then took shape. DuMont's Marketing Technologies division bought Censhare, Elaine, Facelift and Marmind one by one from 2017, and on 8 October 2024 DuMont announced the four as Entirely, with the launch planned for the first half of 2025, which we covered in our news item on the Entirely launch. In April 2025 Entirely bought Epoq, a vendor of AI search and recommendations for online shops, from AB Tasty. On 2 July 2025 DuMont founded Entirely AG and made Ackermann its CEO, with Laurence Gaubert, previously Censhare's CFO, as CFO. Entirely reported more than 400 employees and more than 2,800 customers. Censhare GmbH is now run by CTO Alexander Röthinger and Stefan Heide, who replaced Ackermann as managing director in July 2025, although Censhare's website still lists Ackermann as CEO. In October 2026 Entirely presented "AI-powered micro apps" for marketing tasks that run on its own platform, Entirely OS, hosted in Frankfurt.
Why it matters for PIM and DAM buyers
Our reading: Censhare is a PIM, DAM and content platform owned by a group whose strategy is marketing technology. Ownership by a company next door in the stack is common in this market. Contentserv went to Centric Software, a PLM vendor owned by Dassault Systèmes, and Perfion went to Boyum IT, a company built on ERP add-ons. In each case the owner's neighbouring products shape which integrations and features get attention first.
For Censhare, the neighbouring products are marketing resource management (Marmind), marketing automation (Elaine), social media management (Facelift) and shop personalisation (Epoq). The announcements we found since 2024 follow that direction: a managed cloud, brand portals, video workflows and agents for marketing tasks. None of them is about product data modelling, supplier onboarding, classification standards or channel syndication. That does not mean those areas stand still, since Censhare still sells PIM and PIM syndication modules, but it shows where the public story is going.
The ownership itself looks stable. DuMont has held control for more than seven years, and in 2025 it put a formal company around its marketing technology businesses instead of selling them. The register still lists DuMont Mediengruppe as a shareholder of Censhare GmbH. The change for customers is closer management integration: the person who ran Censhare now runs the whole group, and Censhare's finance and leadership roles overlap with Entirely's.
Integration is one evaluation point among several. Censhare's profile names connectors to ERP, commerce, print and translation systems, and a marketing suite around it adds options for teams that already use Marmind or Elaine. It does not settle the data model, the enrichment workflow or how product data reaches each channel. Our explainer on what DAM and PIM systems each do covers that split.
What changes for customers and buyers
Existing customers have two editions to plan around. Censhare Cloud runs in Censhare's German data centre, and Censhare Classic can still run on-premise and receives updates, so the choice between them is a hosting and operations decision more than a feature decision. The contract counterparty is Censhare GmbH in Munich, part of a group headquartered in Switzerland.
Buyers who look at Censhare mainly for combined PIM and DAM will meet a vendor that now also sells a wider marketing stack. That can shorten a project for a marketing organisation that wants planning, assets and campaigns from one group. For a product data team, the roadmap for product data features is the part to compare against specialist PIM vendors. Our Censhare alternatives guide lists options by situation.
