mediaCockpit Alternatives: 7 PIM Solutions to Compare

· 2026-10-11 · 9 min read

mediaCockpit is a familiar name for manufacturers and retailers in the DACH region and the Benelux that produce print catalogs and B2B data from the same system as their webshop. Teams reopen the decision when the commerce stack changes, when marketplaces become a bigger channel, or when a contract renewal comes up. This guide covers what mediaCockpit is, why teams look for an alternative, and seven PIM systems to compare, each with what to check.

What mediaCockpit is and who it fits

mediaCockpit is a German PIM and DAM platform, founded in 1996 and developed by Bertsch Innovation, sold as SaaS, cloud-hosted or on-premise. According to our mediaCockpit profile, it covers:

  • PIM and DAM in one interface: structured product data plus images, video and PDFs linked to SKUs and attributes.
  • Data modeling and workflows: product hierarchies, relationships, approvals, tasks and roles.
  • Publishing: e-commerce, marketplaces, print catalogs and POS, with print through mediapublisher and priint.
  • Classification: deep ETIM and ECLASS support with e-proCAT, and BMEcat for B2B exchange.
  • GDSN: through the partner b-synced.

Our analyst places it with EU mid-market to enterprise manufacturers, retailers and publishers that need PIM, DAM and publishing tightly together, especially print through InDesign and B2B exchange through BMEcat and ETIM, and that accept a configuration-led or integrator-led rollout and quote-based licensing. The strengths named: a long install base, flexible modeling and workflows, print depth and classification depth.

Why teams look for a mediaCockpit alternative

The watch-outs in our analyst assessment give the usual reasons:

  • It is not a lightweight composable PIM. The API documentation is gated and the REST API is session-based. Teams that build a composable stack often want an API-first system.
  • The interface. Some users find it dated.
  • Marketplace syndication is narrower than in feed-first tools: Amazon and Google are covered, B2B channels less clearly.
  • GDSN through a partner. If retailer data pools are central to your business, a system that operates GDSN itself may fit better.
  • Rollout and licensing. A configuration-led rollout with an integrator and quote-based licensing. If you want a faster start or published prices, compare.

mediaCockpit alternatives at a glance

  • Viamedici: SAP-centric enterprise manufacturers with configurable products, print catalogs and ETIM or ECLASS.
  • novomind iPIM: EU retailers, wholesalers and buying groups that onboard many supplier catalogs, with print through InDesign.
  • Contentserv: PIM and DAM with supplier onboarding and broader feed and marketplace syndication.
  • censhare: companies whose content work is as much about media and cross-media publishing as about product data.
  • Bluestone PIM: a composable, API-only PIM when architecture is the reason to move.
  • Syndigo: brands that must meet retailer requirements and GDSN.
  • Crystallize: brands that sell through their own storefronts and no longer need print.

The alternatives

The order follows fit for typical mediaCockpit buyers, starting with the closest match. Fit and check notes come from each system's profile.

Viamedici

Viamedici is a German vendor, founded in 1996, that sells MDM, PIM, DAM and a product configurator as one suite to large enterprises, as SaaS, cloud-hosted or on-premise.

  • Fits better when: you are an enterprise manufacturer or industrial distributor that runs SAP, sells complex configurable products and needs a governed golden record with a supplier portal outside SAP, next to print and digital catalogs and ETIM or ECLASS. Like mediaCockpit, it has a print heritage, with viaPUBLISH and InDesign integration.
  • Check: it is enterprise-only and not a lean composable PIM, so budget for suite complexity and integrator cost. Evidence for GDSN and GS1 retail syndication is thin.

novomind iPIM

novomind iPIM is a German enterprise PIM from novomind AG, founded in 2000, sold as SaaS, cloud-hosted or on-premise.

  • Fits better when: you are a mid-size to large EU retailer, wholesaler or buying group that onboards hundreds of supplier catalogs. It offers governed supplier onboarding (iPIM Supply), data quality management, BPMN workflows, a native DAM, a print path through InDesign, documented REST APIs and hosting in Germany.
  • Check: its syndication and real-time stories often assume you also adopt novomind iMARKET and iSHOP, and its GDSN certification covers receiving data, not replacing a data pool publisher.

Contentserv

Contentserv is a PIM and product experience vendor with headquarters in Switzerland and Germany, founded in 2006, sold as SaaS, cloud-hosted or on-premise. In February 2025 Centric Software, the PLM vendor owned by Dassault Systèmes, announced it would acquire Contentserv.

  • Fits better when: you want PIM and DAM in one product with supplier onboarding, golden-record patterns for product data and high-volume syndication to marketplaces and feeds, which is where mediaCockpit is narrower. It also has a GDSN model for food and beverage and prints through a publishing partner.
  • Check: treat ETIM, GS1 and eCl@ss as a paid app or partner-led unless a proof of concept shows a native path, and ask about the roadmap and support under Centric. See our Contentserv alternatives.

censhare

censhare is a German platform, founded in 2001, that combines DAM, PIM and content management on a graph database, sold as SaaS, cloud-hosted or on-premise.

  • Fits better when: your content work is as much about media, marketing material and cross-media publishing in many languages as about product data, and you want the DAM at the core of the platform. Translation memory and versioning are part of it.
  • Check: our profile has no full analyst assessment, and engineering BOMs and configurators are likely to sit outside it. Test connector depth, standards support, deployment effort and commercial terms in a scripted demo.

Bluestone PIM

Bluestone PIM is a Norwegian SaaS PIM, founded in 2013, built on microservices with an API-only, MACH-certified architecture.

  • Fits better when: architecture is your main reason to leave mediaCockpit. Bluestone suits mid-market and enterprise manufacturers, distributors and retailers that build a composable stack, and it includes a native DAM, a PDF generator and AI tools for enrichment and translation.
  • Check: you give up mediaCockpit's print and InDesign depth, so check how catalogs will be produced. Our analyst lists deployment effort, proof of the standards you need (such as ETIM) and commercial terms as the points to test.

Syndigo

Syndigo is a Chicago-based platform that combines PIM, MDM, DAM and syndication with a network of retailers, and it is a certified GDSN data pool.

  • Fits better when: your revenue depends on retailer compliance, GDSN and enhanced product page content, for example in consumer goods, foodservice, health and beauty or hardlines. mediaCockpit runs GDSN through a partner; Syndigo operates it.
  • Check: it is not a classic PIM. Authoring and APIs are secondary to network compliance, the content hub and the Riversand MDM are two integration surfaces, and its profile does not list print publishing. See Syndigo vs competitors.

Crystallize

Crystallize is a Norwegian headless commerce backend, founded in 2017, that combines PIM, content and commerce behind a GraphQL API, for small and mid-market teams.

  • Fits better when: you are a brand that sells through its own storefronts and wants structured product storytelling, subscriptions and pricing per market in one backend, with engineers to build the front end. Its base pricing tiers are published.
  • Check: it has no native GDSN, ETIM or marketplace syndication, its profile lists no print publishing, and it is not built for catalog operations around an ERP. That rules it out for most of mediaCockpit's B2B and print users.

How to choose and switch

  1. Inventory what mediaCockpit does today

The data model, ETIM and ECLASS classes and versions, BMEcat exports, print publications and templates, assets and their links, the GDSN partner connection and every integration. This shows which parts carry the value for you.

  2. Decide what happens to print

Keep print in the PIM, move it to a separate publishing tool, or stop it. This decision splits the shortlist: the suites above keep print close, the lighter systems do not.

  3. Demo with your own data

Give each vendor one product family with ETIM classes and assets, one print publication and one BMEcat or marketplace export. Let the people who maintain the data and the catalogs score the work.

  4. Migrate in slices with a parallel run

Move one product family, channel or publication at a time, and compare the output of mediaCockpit and the new system until it matches. The PIM RFP guide helps you turn the results into requirements.

  5. Switch off last

Only when every export, feed, publication and the GDSN connection run from the new system. Plan the end of the contract around that date, and check the notice period early.

Frequently asked questions

What is mediaCockpit?

mediaCockpit is a German PIM, DAM and publishing system, founded in 1996 and developed by Bertsch Innovation. It runs as SaaS, cloud-hosted or on-premise and serves European mid-market and enterprise manufacturers, retailers and publishers that need product data, media and print catalogs close together, with deep ETIM and ECLASS support.

What are the best mediaCockpit alternatives?

For a similar suite with print and classification, compare Viamedici, novomind iPIM, Contentserv and censhare. For a composable, API-only PIM, look at Bluestone PIM. If retailer compliance and GDSN matter most, Syndigo. For a brand that sells mainly through its own storefront, Crystallize.

Is mediaCockpit a PIM or a DAM?

Both, plus publishing. It manages structured product data and digital assets such as images, video and PDFs in one interface, links assets to SKUs and attributes, and produces print catalogs through mediapublisher and priint. Alternatives that keep PIM and DAM together include Viamedici, novomind iPIM, Contentserv and censhare.

Which mediaCockpit alternatives support ETIM and ECLASS?

Viamedici is built for DACH and EU industrial companies that need ETIM and eCl@ss. Contentserv supports industrial classification in its data model, but treat ETIM and eCl@ss as a paid app or partner-led unless a proof of concept shows a native path. For the other alternatives on this page, ask for proof with your own ETIM classes.

Which alternatives can produce print catalogs?

Viamedici has a print and catalog heritage with InDesign integration, novomind iPIM has a print path through InDesign, censhare is built for cross-media publishing, and Contentserv prints through a publishing partner. Test each with one of your own catalogs or price lists.

Is there a lighter alternative to mediaCockpit?

Bluestone PIM is a composable, API-only SaaS PIM for the mid-market and enterprise, and Crystallize a headless commerce backend for smaller teams with engineers. Both are lighter in architecture, but you give up mediaCockpit's print and classification depth, so check how catalogs and ETIM data would be produced.

What is the difference between mediaCockpit and Viamedici?

Both are German, founded in 1996, and combine PIM, DAM and print publishing for manufacturers. mediaCockpit serves the mid-market and enterprise. Viamedici is enterprise-only and adds multi-domain MDM with a golden record, a supplier portal and a product configurator, with a strong SAP integration. Viamedici fits SAP-centric companies with configurable products; budget for its suite complexity.

How do you move off mediaCockpit?

List your data model, ETIM and ECLASS classes, BMEcat exports, print publications, assets and the GDSN partner connection. Shortlist three systems, demo them with one product family and one print publication, migrate in slices with a parallel run, and plan the end date around the contract's notice period.
