PIM for Industrial Wholesale: Seven Platforms Checked on Supplier Data, ETIM and ERP Fit
Stephan Spijkers · 2026-11-03 · 11 min read

In industrial wholesale the hard part of product data comes from outside the company. Hundreds of suppliers deliver technical data in their own formats, every product needs an ETIM or ECLASS class before a customer can compare one cable with the next, and the result has to line up with prices and stock in the ERP. That puts classification, supplier intake and mapping ownership at the front of a PIM evaluation. ERP fit is one important point among them, while most of the daily work and cost sits on the intake side.
Pimberly made a similar case in 5 Best PIM Systems for Industrial Distributors, written by Noemy Miyamoto, published on 30 October and updated on 2 November 2026. It compares Pimberly, inriver, Akeneo, Stibo Systems STEP and Unilog CX1 PIM. Pimberly is one of the five and lists itself first. Read it as market positioning with good test advice: bring three real supplier files to every demo, classify a 500 SKU sample by rule, and ask for a live customer on your own ERP.
This article takes the same question to industrial wholesale in Europe and the Benelux, where ETIM and data pools such as 2BA shape the work, and checks each claim on the vendor's own pages. We left out Unilog CX1 PIM, whose page by Pimberly's own reading says little about intake or classification, and added Compano, novomind iPIM and Pimcore.
What decides fit in industrial wholesale
Classification comes first, because in technical wholesale it is the data model. ETIM gives every technical product a class with defined features, values and units, and it is widely used in electrical, HVAC, plumbing and building supplies. ECLASS follows the same logic across more industries. A PIM for this trade has to hold the class and its release version on each product, and both classifications where suppliers deliver both. ETIM International plans the final release of ETIM 11.0 for 1 December 2026, so how a platform absorbs a new release is a practical question this winter. Our guide to GS1, ETIM, ECLASS and BMEcat in a PIM explains the standards and what a release change means for the attribute model. "Supports ETIM" can mean a native model, an app store add-on or a partner extension.
Supplier intake is the second point. Data arrives as feeds and data pool records from the larger manufacturers, as filled templates from suppliers willing to use them, and as loose spreadsheets and PDFs from the long tail. In the Netherlands and Belgium much of the technical data reaches wholesalers through 2BA and InstallData, so the PIM has to import from the pool as well as from files. Onboarding is also becoming a separate product category in front of the PIM, as our Trends in PIM piece on the onboarding layer describes.
The ERP is the third point. Article numbers, purchase and sales prices, conditions and stock stay in the ERP, while content and technical attributes belong in the PIM. The question is less whether a connector exists and more who builds it, who maintains it after a release, and who owns the field mappings once the project team leaves. With one ERP and one PIM a direct link is often enough. With a webshop, a data pool, punchout catalogs and print added, an iPaaS gives you one place to monitor and change the flows. Where ERP stops and PIM starts sets out the field boundary, and our comparison of SAP S/4HANA connectors and iPaaS routes shows how differently vendors answer that for a single ERP.
Scale and channels complete the picture. An industrial range runs to hundreds of thousands of SKUs with dozens of technical attributes each, and bulk import and validation have to work at that volume. Output is B2B: BMEcat for a buying platform, customer-specific catalogs, data pool uploads, the webshop and often a printed price list, all from one record. Our wholesale PIM guide has the general selection method and a broader long list; this article narrows it to industrial distribution.
Seven platforms, read against those points
The seven platforms below take different routes to the same job and appear in no particular order. Each capability comes from the vendor's own site, documentation or app store, or from the partner page where a partner delivers it.
Pimberly
Pimberly is a UK SaaS PIM with DAM included. Its Vendor Portal gives each supplier a product data template with mandatory fields and validation rules per attribute, checks the upload automatically and returns an error report for records that fail (Pimberly Vendor Portal, Pimberly help center). Decision tables that business users maintain drive its grading rules (Pimberly), and the distributor post states that they also apply classification by rule, including ETIM. On the ERP side, the integrations page describes an open API and says Pimberly has integrated with all major ERP platforms, and the post names the Epicor and Infor families (Pimberly integrations). The post also publishes a price: a Regular tier from $36,000 a year for 50,000 SKUs. The pages we opened do not describe an ETIM release import or a 2BA connector, so ask how a new release is handled.
Compano
Compano builds its PIM specifically for the construction and installation trade, and ETIM is the core of the data model. Its site lists ETIM Dynamic with a weekly automatic update next to static ETIM 8, 9 and 10, message standards including DICO/SALES, INSBOU, ETIM xChange, BMEcat, FABDIS and DQR, and connectors to Artikelbeheer.nl, 2BA, InstallData and other European data pools (Compano). For wholesalers, Compano's MDM software imports supplier assortments together with purchase and sales prices and conditions (Compano MDM). The integration page names ERP Connect in both directions, mostly over JSON, and experience with Microsoft Dynamics F&O, SAP, Kerridge Wholesale, AFAS and Exact among others (Compano). The fit is narrow by design, so a distributor with a broader range should test categories that have no ETIM class.
novomind iPIM
novomind iPIM comes from Hamburg, and its iPIM Supply module is built for supplier intake at volume: AI-based mapping, configurable transformation and validation, quality gates for approval, and detection and merging of duplicate items from several suppliers (novomind). Since November 2023 a self-service portal lets suppliers deliver their data themselves (novomind). novomind has been a supporting member of ETIM Deutschland since July 2021 (novomind). Its developer documentation describes a REST synchronization endpoint for item data that runs through the iPIM ERP import process (novomind iPIM documentation). We found no page on a packaged ERP connector or on ETIM release import, so ask for both in the demo.
Stibo Systems STEP
Stibo Systems is a Danish multidomain MDM vendor. Its distribution page positions STEP for governing product, customer, supplier and location data together, with governed vendor onboarding and item setup (Stibo Systems). Pimberly's post notes that this page does not name ETIM. The STEP documentation does: STEP imports ETIM 5 and the ETIM IXF format for ETIM 6 to 10 as an alternate classification, and several ETIM versions can sit side by side (Stibo Systems documentation). A Supplier Web UI lets each supplier maintain only its own products (Stibo Systems documentation). For SAP, Stibo lists its own material master connector over IDoc MATMAS05. STEP has the broadest scope here. That suits a large distributor that also governs supplier and customer data, and it is more platform than a PIM-only brief needs.
Akeneo
Akeneo is a French PIM sold as SaaS. Its Supplier Data Manager gives suppliers an access portal with templates and file upload, applies blocking rules and softer warnings per field, such as required, conditional, allowed values and min or max values, and can be bought standalone without the Akeneo PIM (Akeneo, Akeneo Help Center). ETIM comes through the Akeneo App Store. The ETIM App by Induxx fetches ETIM 8, 9, 10 or the dynamic release and creates the classes as Akeneo attributes, at a quote-based price and with credentials from ETIM International or Ketenstandaard (Akeneo App Store, Induxx documentation). CatalogExpress, another app, adds BMEcat and other B2B exchange formats (Akeneo App Store). For SAP S/4HANA, Akeneo provides accelerators that the customer runs and maintains in its own SAP Integration Suite. Industrial standards come through apps, so price them and name who owns them.
inriver
inriver is a Swedish SaaS PIM for manufacturers, brands and wholesalers. Its Spring 2026 release added Content Onboarding API connectivity for imports from ERP, PLM, supplier portals and partner feeds, with AI-based mapping and validation at intake, plus document intake from PDF, Excel and other files with a human review step (inriver). ETIM comes through Ctac, an inriver Platinum partner. Its extension imports ETIM classes, builds a template from the class features, supports all ETIM language packs in a static or a dynamic variant, and publishes to data pools through a BMEcat connector (Ctac). For SAP, inriver announced an S/4HANA Cloud Connector for S/4HANA Public Cloud in May 2026. Pimberly's post found neither ETIM nor a named ERP on inriver's distributor pages; both exist, through a partner and for one SAP edition.
Pimcore
Pimcore is an Austrian open-core platform for PIM, DAM and related data, which suits distributors with developers who want control over the data model. ETIM arrives through an extension. Blackbit's BMEcat Import/Export bundle for Data Director, sold in the Pimcore Store for €1,499 a year, creates classification stores from ETIM releases and builds BMEcat 1.2 and 2005.1 exports. It requires a commercial Pimcore license and lists ECLASS as coming soon (Pimcore Store). SAP integration is partner-built, for example diva-e's connector on SAP Cloud Integration. Specialist onboarding vendors such as Onedot sell into Pimcore for supplier intake. Brouwland, a Belgian retailer and wholesaler of brewing supplies, had to replace a heavily customized Pimcore install that had gone out of support, and its case story shows why custom logic should be redesigned rather than carried over.

Who owns the mappings
Every route in the table ends with someone maintaining a mapping: supplier columns to your attributes, your attributes to ETIM classes, and PIM fields to ERP fields. A native ETIM model puts the release work on the PIM vendor. An app or a partner extension puts it on a third party with its own contract and roadmap. An iPaaS or a partner-built ERP link puts it on whoever runs that layer, which is often your own team after go-live. Each can work. The risk is a selection that never names the owner, so the first ETIM release or ERP upgrade turns into an unplanned project.
Pimberly's demo advice holds for every vendor here, Pimberly included: judge the platform by what it does with your messiest supplier file. Bring your worst supplier file to the PIM demo describes how to script that test. For industrial wholesale, add two scenarios to the script. Classify one product family to your current ETIM release, and push one supplier price change through to the ERP and the webshop in the same run. The answers show where the mappings live and who will maintain them.
