Salesforce Did Not Buy Informatica, So MDM Stayed a Separate Decision
- 01 Bid
- 02 Pause
- 03 Split
- 04 MDM
The April 2024 talks for Salesforce to buy Informatica failed, so master data management and data quality stayed a product you buy on their own. Waiting for the CRM suite to absorb that stack does not change your shortlist.
On 12 April the Wall Street Journal reported that Salesforce, led by Marc Benioff, was negotiating to buy Informatica. The figure discussed then was about $10 billion, based on Informatica's share price that day. On 22 April the talks were off.
The two companies already worked together. Informatica sat next to Salesforce's MuleSoft product, moving data with ETL (extract, transform, load), and it was already in the picture for data quality and data lakes. A purchase would have put that work inside one vendor. It did not happen. You still decide who owns the customer record in the CRM, and who owns the product and master record beside it. The commerce stack guide maps that split: which system may publish a field, and which one only reads it.
Salesforce, founded in 1999, sells cloud CRM across sales, service, marketing and analytics. Informatica, founded in 1993, sells data integration, data quality, master data management and cloud data management. Those are adjacent jobs, and each one sits on its own contract. A buyer who needs one maintained record for product and party data is still making an MDM decision. The MDM guide sets out what that decision covers, without assuming a CRM vendor will make it for you.
CNBC and the Wall Street Journal both pointed at the same break: the two sides could not agree what Informatica was worth, including the cost of putting the products together.
Informatica is still an independent vendor of MDM and data quality. Salesforce is still the CRM. If data quality is the gap in your stack, give it an owner and a rule set, the way product data quality and governance describes. An acquisition was never going to do that work for you.
