Skwirrel Alternatives: 7 PIM Solutions to Compare
Stephan Spijkers · 2026-10-11 · 8 min read

Skwirrel is one of the PIMs built for Dutch and German technical wholesale, where ETIM classification and the 2BA data pool decide what customers can find. Teams compare it with other systems when they select a PIM, and again when their channels or market change. This guide covers what Skwirrel is, why teams look at alternatives, seven options by situation, and how to switch without losing your ETIM data.
What Skwirrel is and who it fits
According to our Skwirrel profile, Skwirrel is a SaaS PIM from the Netherlands, active in the Benelux and DACH, for small and mid-market companies. Our analyst places it with technical wholesalers, distributors and manufacturers where ETIM classification and exchange with 2BA or a similar data pool are mandatory, connected to an ERP and to Magento or WooCommerce, with a pragmatic integration style led by the vendor. The strengths our analyst lists:
- ETIM and data pools: deep ETIM support and data pool fit, with active development on ETIM 10, trade items and publications.
- API: a JSON-RPC API with webhooks.
- Data quality: a dashboard that shows missing values and completeness.
- Attachments: documents and images linked to products, a light form of DAM.
- Pricing and references: transparent entry SaaS pricing and credible references in technical markets.
Why teams look for a Skwirrel alternative
The reasons below come from our analyst's assessment, not from complaints.
- Marketplace-first selling. Our analyst calls Skwirrel the wrong tool for Amazon or marketplace-first syndication.
- GS1-led consumer goods. It is also the wrong tool for consumer goods brands where GS1 and GDSN lead.
- Enterprise master data. Skwirrel is a PIM for small and mid-market companies, not a multidomain MDM. Our guide to master data management covers that end of the market.
- Vendor scale. It is a small vendor. Teams that need contractual service levels or support around the clock validate those first, and some prefer a larger supplier.
- Sector depth. A construction manufacturer that also has to produce Dutch specification texts and declarations of performance may want a PIM built for that sector.
Skwirrel alternatives at a glance
- Utopis: best for construction and installation manufacturers with ETIM, 2BA and Dutch specification standards.
- WisePIM: best for AI enrichment, translation and ETIM auto-fill.
- KatanaPIM: best for merchants on Magento, Shopify or Shopware with published pricing.
- ProductFlow: best for sellers whose main channel is marketplaces.
- Syndy: best for consumer goods brands that send content to retailers.
- Bluestone PIM: best for large catalogs and many markets in a composable stack.
- Crystallize: best for brands that sell direct through their own storefront.
The alternatives
Utopis
Utopis is a Dutch SaaS PIM for the construction and installation sector, built around ETIM, BIM and other industry standards. Our analyst places it with construction and installation manufacturers in the Benelux and nearby DACH markets that publish ETIM-classified data to IB and 2BA, produce STABU, RAW and NL-SfB specifications and declarations of performance, and offer configurators or advice tools.
- Where it differs: deeper in construction, with system modeling, Dutch specification standards and configurators, where Skwirrel serves technical wholesale more broadly.
- Check: our analyst calls it the wrong tool for retail marketplace PIM and GS1 GDSN-first programs. It is a small team too, so validate support hours and the roadmap. Our profiles estimate a longer deployment than for Skwirrel.
WisePIM
WisePIM is a Dutch SaaS PIM built around AI: attribute extraction, generated descriptions and translation, plus fast onboarding of supplier feeds. The profile lists ETIM release import, ETIM auto-fill, conformance checks and BMEcat export for selling to wholesalers.
- Where it differs: AI does the classification and enrichment work that teams otherwise do by hand, and translation is part of the product.
- Check: our analyst says to evaluate it on deployment effort, proof of standards support and commercial transparency. Its profile does not list 2BA, so ask how data reaches the data pool. The vendor's AI accuracy claims are not independently tested.
KatanaPIM
KatanaPIM is a Dutch SaaS PIM for small and mid-market merchants, wholesalers and distributors, often on Magento, Shopify or Shopware with Exact or a similar ERP, with published tier pricing and the API on every plan.
- Where it differs: built for merchants with variant-heavy catalogs and webshops, where Skwirrel is built for technical classification.
- Check: ETIM, GS1 and GDSN run through partner middleware, so it is not a like-for-like option where ETIM is mandatory. See our KatanaPIM alternatives.
ProductFlow
ProductFlow is a Dutch PIM and marketplace management platform. Our analyst places it with European marketplace-led merchants, especially on Bol.com, where it is a Gold Partner.
- Where it differs: it is built for the marketplace-first job that our analyst says Skwirrel does not fit: listings, offers, orders and repricing per marketplace in one login.
- Check: it is not a fit for GDSN, ETIM, digital product passport or master data programs, and our analyst rates its workflow and DAM depth as weak.
Syndy
Syndy is a Dutch PIM and DAM platform, part of the Icecat group, built for content exchange between brands, suppliers and retailers. It maps product content to retailer-specific formats and scores completeness, with FMCG, DIY, toys and healthcare among its sectors.
- Where it differs: it is built for consumer goods brands that deliver to retailers, a job our analyst says Skwirrel does not fit.
- Check: its profile does not list GDSN, so confirm how it handles a GS1 data pool if a retailer requires one. Our analyst says to evaluate it on deployment effort, proof of standards support and commercial transparency.
Bluestone PIM
Bluestone PIM is a Norwegian SaaS PIM on a microservice, API-first architecture, for mid-market and enterprise manufacturers, distributors and retailers with large catalogs across markets and channels.
- Where it differs: built for a larger scale and a composable stack, with validation rules, completeness scoring, a DAM and AI tools in the product.
- Check: proof of standards support, so ask for a demo of ETIM and your data pool export, plus deployment effort and commercial terms. Our profiles estimate a longer deployment than for Skwirrel.
Crystallize
Crystallize is a Norwegian headless backend that combines PIM, content and commerce behind a GraphQL API. Our analyst places it with digital-native direct-to-consumer and B2B commerce teams that build custom storefronts and have engineers available.
- Where it differs: it fits a brand that sells direct through its own storefront, not through wholesale and data pools.
- Check: it has no native ETIM, GDSN or marketplace syndication, and it is not a pure PIM for ERP-centric catalog work.
How to choose and switch
Decide whether ETIM stays mandatory
If your customers still find you through ETIM and 2BA, only systems with proven ETIM support belong on the shortlist. If your main channel has moved to marketplaces or direct sales, the field opens up.
Inventory what Skwirrel does today
List the ETIM version and classes you use, the trade items, the publications, the data pool connections, the ERP and webshop integrations, and the attachments. The PIM RFP guide helps turn this into requirements.
Shortlist two or three systems
Match your reasons to the alternatives above, and drop any system that fails a hard requirement on paper.
Demo with your own data
Give each vendor one real product family with its ETIM classification, and ask for a test export to 2BA or your data pool.
Migrate and switch off
Export classes, features and attachments, run both systems in parallel, and switch Skwirrel off only when the data pool feed and the webshop run from the new system.

Frequently asked questions
What is Skwirrel?
Skwirrel is a Dutch SaaS PIM for technical products, active in the Benelux and DACH. Our analyst assessment places it with technical wholesalers, distributors and manufacturers that must classify products in ETIM and exchange data with 2BA or a similar data pool, connected to an ERP and to Magento or WooCommerce.
What are the best Skwirrel alternatives?
For the same technical job, Utopis and WisePIM. For a different job, KatanaPIM fits merchants on Magento, Shopify or Shopware, ProductFlow marketplace sellers and Syndy brands that supply retailers. Bluestone PIM fits companies that outgrow the mid-market, and Crystallize brands that build their own storefront.
Which PIM systems support ETIM besides Skwirrel?
On this page, Utopis supports ETIM and publishes to 2BA for the construction and installation sector, and WisePIM imports ETIM releases, auto-fills ETIM features with AI and exports BMEcat. Other profiles with ETIM support include myview, Mediacockpit and AtroPIM.
What is the difference between Skwirrel and Utopis?
Both are Dutch SaaS PIMs with ETIM and 2BA. Skwirrel serves technical wholesale, distribution and manufacturing broadly. Utopis goes deeper into construction and installation, with STABU, RAW and NL-SfB specifications, declarations of performance and configurators. Our profiles estimate a longer deployment for Utopis.
Is Skwirrel suitable for marketplaces such as Amazon and Bol.com?
Our analyst assessment calls Skwirrel the wrong tool for Amazon or marketplace-first syndication. If marketplaces are your main channel, compare ProductFlow, which manages listings, offers, orders and repricing per marketplace.
Does Skwirrel fit consumer goods brands with GS1 data?
Our analyst assessment calls it the wrong tool for GS1 and GDSN-led consumer goods. Brands that deliver content to retailers can compare Syndy, which maps product content to retailer-specific formats. Check how any candidate handles a GS1 data pool if a retailer requires one.
How do you switch from Skwirrel without losing ETIM data?
Check that the new PIM supports the ETIM version you use, export the classes, features and attachments, and test one product family end to end, including the export to 2BA or your data pool. Run both systems in parallel until the new data pool feed matches, then switch Skwirrel off.
