For automatic print catalogs and price lists, choose the route before you choose the PIM. If a designer still lays out your catalog in Adobe InDesign, combine a PIM such as inriver, Akeneo, Pimcore, Sales Layer, Catsy or AtroPIM with an InDesign layer such as priint:suite or EasyCatalog. If you mainly produce price lists, data sheets and catalog extracts in volume, look at PIMs that generate the PDF themselves: Incony ANTEROS, the AtroPIM PDF Generator and Pimcore Web-to-Print, with Plytix and Apimio for simpler sheets.
Pagination and CatalogForce sit in between: publishing tools that take data from a PIM or a spreadsheet and return print-ready files. This page explains the three routes, compares what each tool documents about InDesign, price lists and languages, and lists the product data you need before any of it works. The capabilities come from each vendor's own pages, checked on 3 November 2026. For the wider PIM market see the best PIM software.
Which PIM is best for producing print catalogs and price lists automatically?
The honest answer is a combination, not a product. A catalog has two halves: the product record and the page. The PIM owns the record. Something has to turn it into pages, and that something decides how much layout control you keep, how fast a price change reaches paper, and who you need on the team.
Three questions narrow the field quickly:
- Who owns the layout? If brand and design matter, as in a lifestyle catalog or a brochure, the layout stays in InDesign and the PIM feeds it. If the document is a structured list, as in a price list, a spare parts catalog or a data sheet, a template engine can own the layout.
- How many versions do you print? One annual catalog in two languages is a different job from a price list per customer group, per country and per currency, every month.
- Who presses the button? A central marketing team, a sales rep in a regional office, or a website visitor who downloads a data sheet. Self-service needs web-to-print or an API, not a desktop plugin.
A manufacturer or wholesaler in Germany, Austria or Switzerland that still publishes a thick technical catalog and dozens of price lists usually ends up with two routes at once: InDesign for the image catalog and native generation for price lists and data sheets.
Three ways from PIM data to print: InDesign plugin, a publishing tool next to the PIM, native PDF generation
1. An InDesign plugin connected to the PIM. The designer works in InDesign as before, but the product data comes in from the PIM and can be refreshed on the page. EasyCatalog is the best-known example: an InDesign plugin that shows a data source inside InDesign, with an Enterprise Data Provider module for importing from a PIM. Several PIMs connect to it. AtroCore sells an AtroPIM adapter for EasyCatalog, and Sales Layer offers both a simple CSV connector and an EasyCatalog connector. priint's priint:comet plugins for InDesign and Illustrator, Catsy's InDesign sync and inriver Print & Publish work the same way. The upside is full design control. The cost is a desktop seat per designer, an InDesign license per seat, and a person who still has to open the file.
2. A publishing platform next to the PIM. A separate system reads from the PIM, ERP and DAM, holds the templates and the publication logic, and produces documents in batches or on demand. priint:suite covers catalogs, price lists, web-to-print and server rendering, and priint:cloud returns a PDF from a REST call. Pagination is a cloud service that fills an InDesign layout with your data and returns PDF and InDesign files. Adobe sells InDesign Server as the engine underneath many such systems and says it is most often used with partner solutions. The upside is volume and self-service across teams. The cost is a second system with its own templates, release cycle and support desk.
3. Native PDF generation in the PIM. The PIM renders the PDF itself from HTML, CSS or document templates, without InDesign. Incony generates catalogs, price lists and data sheets as PDFs this way, AtroPIM's PDF Generator builds catalogs, price lists and product sheets from HTML5/CSS3 or LibreOffice templates, and Pimcore Web-to-Print renders print documents to PDF through Gotenberg or PDFreactor. The upside is that a price change becomes a new PDF without a designer. The cost is less layout freedom, and someone who can write templates.
| Route | Who owns the layout | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| InDesign plugin | The designer, in InDesign | Image catalogs, brochures, flyers | Seats and InDesign licenses per user; manual steps stay |
| Publishing tool next to the PIM | Template authors in the publishing system | Many versions, markets and teams; web-to-print portals | A second system to buy, integrate and maintain |
| Native PDF in the PIM | Template authors in the PIM | Price lists, data sheets, technical catalogs, on demand | Template skills; less control over complex designed spreads |
Our AtroPIM lightning demo recap shows the native route next to the InDesign route on one product set, and the priint session at Webwinkel Vakdagen shows the publishing-platform route with InDesign plugins and web-to-print portals.
Which PIMs and publishing tools do what?
The table lists PIMs with documented print output first, then PIMs that print through InDesign, then publishing tools that work with any PIM. It is not a ranking. A cell says "not documented" when the vendor's own page we opened does not state it. Checked on 3 November 2026.

| CatalogForce | Catalog software with its own product database | Optional: browser-based PDF builder, or InDesign templates | Pricebooks; different prices per event with permissions | Any number of languages | CatalogForce |
| priint:suite and priint:cloud | Publishing platform next to the PIM | priint:comet plugins for InDesign and Illustrator; priint:cloud returns a PDF through a REST API | Yes, price lists and target group catalogs | Multilingual, target-group-oriented publications | priint |
| EasyCatalog (65bit) | InDesign plugin | Yes | Yes, price lists are a listed document type | Not documented | 65bit, pricing |
| Pagination | Cloud database publishing service | No local installation needed, but it works from an InDesign layout; InDesign only for manual edits | Yes, batches with different prices, currencies or product lists | Not documented | Pagination, pricing |
| Adobe InDesign | Layout software; InDesign Server for automation | It is the layout tool | Data Merge fills a template from a CSV file, with no catalog or price logic of its own | Not applicable | Adobe, Data Merge API |
Three things stand out. First, "has print" covers very different depths: Plytix and WisePIM export sheets, while Incony, AtroPIM and Pimcore are built to produce full catalogs. Second, two PIMs document both routes: AtroPIM (PDF Generator or EasyCatalog) and Incony (native PDFs or InDesign transfer). Third, Pimcore moved Web-to-Print to its Enterprise edition, so a Community edition project does not get it.
What has to be in the product data before print automation works?
A webshop forgives gaps that a catalog does not. A missing attribute on a product page is a blank line; on a catalog spread it breaks the table, the column width or the page count. Before a vendor demo, check these fields in your own data:
| Data | Why print needs it |
|---|---|
| Chapter and category structure with a sort order | The catalog follows a reading order, not a search result |
| Parent and variant structure | Variant tables have to land under the right parent on the right page |
| Attributes in consistent units and formats | Table columns break on "10mm", "1 cm" and "0.01 m" in the same column |
| Short and long texts with length limits | A template has fixed space; a webshop text often does not fit |
| Print-quality images, icons and symbols | Web images are too small for print; certification marks need their own files |
| Prices with a validity date and currency | A printed price list is valid for a period and has to say so |
| Complete translations per print language | One untranslated field shows up in every copy of that language |
| Approval or status flag | The publishing step has to know which products are ready |
The attribute side is covered in the product data model explained and product data quality and governance. Images and layout files are the asset side, explained in what DAM stands for. Our event recap on product data publication makes the same point from the publishing side: the PDF and the web page fail together when the record is incomplete.
Price lists per customer group, market and language
A price list is the most data-driven print product there is: little design, many versions, and a price that changes more often than the description. The difficult part is not the layout but knowing which price belongs to which document.
Where the price comes from. Net prices, discounts and conditions normally live in the ERP, not in the PIM. The PIM holds the content around the price. Where ERP stops, PIM starts sets out that boundary. Decide early whether the publishing step reads prices from the ERP directly or through the PIM, and how late a price change can still reach a document.
Per customer group. Incony documents keeping up to a hundred different customer price lists current and restricting special prices or data to defined customers or sales regions. The priint:suite listing on the Akeneo App Store names customer- and target-group-oriented price lists, late price updates before printing and individualized PDF price lists. CatalogForce sets different prices per event and grants permissions per event.
Per market and currency. Pagination creates whole batches when versions differ in prices, currencies or product lists. Apimio lists per-market currency line sheets as a roadmap item, so it is not there today.
Per language. Incony pulls texts from its translation management module, AtroPIM uses language-specific templates, and priint:suite describes multilingual, target-group-oriented publications. Check that units, decimal separators and date formats change with the language too, not only the text.
Akeneo's move into pricing data is covered in Akeneo bets the future of PIM is price, too. For wholesalers, where a printed price list sits next to BMEcat and punchout catalogs, see PIM for industrial wholesale.
Which one fits which starting point?
| Your starting point | Look first at |
|---|---|
| A designer builds the catalog in InDesign today, data comes from spreadsheets | EasyCatalog first, then a PIM with an EasyCatalog connector (AtroPIM, Sales Layer) |
| A large multilingual catalog programme with many target groups and sales self-service | priint:suite with your PIM (Akeneo, Pimcore), or inriver Print & Publish |
| Hundreds of price lists and data sheets on demand, no designer in the loop | Incony ANTEROS, the AtroPIM PDF Generator |
| You already run Pimcore Enterprise | Pimcore Web-to-Print, with priint:suite if designers need InDesign |
| A brand or small wholesaler that needs spec sheets and simple price lists | Plytix PDF export, Apimio Line Sheets |
| Retail leaflets and in-store material next to the webshop | Pimalion, whose customers describe using it for leaflets and in-store display material |
| No PIM yet, and the catalog is the first problem to solve | CatalogForce or Pagination, then a PIM later |
If a publishing alliance is part of the pitch, read our note on Bertsch Innovation and priint: two vendors working together still ship on separate roadmaps. Print output belongs in your requirements list; the B2B PIM requirements checklist and PIM features and capabilities help you write it, and how to select the right PIM gives the method. Publication is the last stage of the product data process, and the wholesale long list is in our top 10 PIM solutions for wholesale.
How we evaluated
We started from the tools that AI search answers name for this question and from the PIMs and publishing tools in our directory with print output. For each one we opened the vendor's own product page, documentation, help center, App Store listing or pricing page on 3 November 2026, and recorded whether InDesign is needed, what the vendor says about price lists and languages, and any published price. Where a page did not state something, we wrote "not documented". We did not use third-party reviews for capability cells and made no claims about time saved. Synergy Multichannel Publisher has a profile in our directory, but we could not find the vendor's own documentation, so it is not in the table. The starting-point table is our editorial judgment based on those documented capabilities.
PIMvendors is an independent PIM selection platform. The table order follows the publishing route, not a score. Print features and prices change, so check the vendor's page and ask for a demo on your own data before you sign.

Frequently asked questions
Which PIM is best for producing print catalogs and price lists automatically?
It depends on the route. For designed catalogs that stay in Adobe InDesign, pair a PIM such as inriver, Akeneo, Pimcore, Sales Layer, Catsy or AtroPIM with an InDesign layer such as priint:suite or EasyCatalog. For price lists and data sheets without a designer, look at PIMs that generate PDFs themselves: Incony ANTEROS, the AtroPIM PDF Generator and Pimcore Web-to-Print, or Plytix and Apimio for simple sheets. Pagination and CatalogForce are publishing tools you can run next to any data source.
Do I need Adobe InDesign to make a catalog from my PIM?
Not always. Incony ANTEROS, the AtroPIM PDF Generator, Pimcore Web-to-Print, Plytix and Apimio generate PDFs without InDesign. Pagination runs without a local InDesign installation but works from an InDesign layout. You need InDesign when a designer owns the layout, which is the case with EasyCatalog, priint:comet, Catsy's InDesign sync and inriver Print & Publish.
What is the difference between EasyCatalog and priint:suite?
EasyCatalog is a plugin that shows a data source inside InDesign, licensed per user, with an Enterprise Data Provider module for PIM imports. priint:suite is a publishing platform that sits between your PIM, ERP or DAM and the layout tools, with InDesign and Illustrator plugins, server rendering, web-to-print and a cloud service for on-demand documents. EasyCatalog fits a design team; priint:suite fits a publishing programme across many teams and markets.
Can a PIM create customer-specific price lists?
Some can, and some tools next to the PIM can. Incony documents keeping up to a hundred different customer price lists current and restricting special prices to defined customers or sales regions. priint:suite on the Akeneo App Store lists customer- and target-group-oriented price lists. CatalogForce sets different prices per event with permissions. The net prices and conditions themselves usually come from the ERP.
What product data do you need before you automate a catalog?
A chapter and category structure with a sort order, attributes in consistent units, texts that fit the layout, a clear parent and variant structure, print-quality images and icons, prices with a validity date from the ERP, complete translations for every language you print, and an approval status that tells the publishing step which products are ready.
What does catalog automation cost?
Some tools publish prices. On 3 November 2026 EasyCatalog listed €1,199 per user, plus €459 for the Enterprise Data Provider module. Pagination listed €100 a month per template on its Professional plan, billed annually. AtroCore listed catalogs from €5,100 in year one for AtroCore or AtroPIM users. priint, inriver, Incony and most others quote on request. Add template design and data cleanup to the budget.
