PIM comparison
Akeneo vs Plytix
Two PIM-first SaaS platforms, one modular with open-source roots, one with prices published by SKU count. How Akeneo and Plytix differ on scope, data model, channels, AI, architecture and pricing, from public sources only.
Same category, two different emphases
Akeneo
In its own words “The Product Experience (PX) company”5
A French PIM vendor with open-source roots. It sells a SaaS suite it calls the Product Cloud: the PIM at the centre, with digital asset management, supplier onboarding and channel activation around it, and since the PricingHUB acquisition in 2026, pricing as well.
Plytix
In its own words “The product information management (PIM) platform built for multichannel commerce”44
A SaaS PIM with a built-in DAM, run mostly from Málaga, Spain, and hosted on AWS in Ireland. Prices are published per month by SKU count, starting with a free plan, and feeds, brand portals, data sheets and store connectors are sold as add-ons. It is built for brands and retailers selling across webshops and marketplaces, many of them on Shopify.

“Both keep the product record at the centre. Count your SKUs, channels and suppliers first, then ask both vendors to model your own catalogue.”
What they have in common
Read the differences below against this common ground. Both are credible options for the same broad job.
- Both are PIM-first and keep to product data: neither lists customer, supplier or location domains.
- Both are sold as vendor-hosted SaaS, with digital asset management next to the product record and a CDN for delivering assets.
- Both organise attributes into product families with variants, and both offer a REST API.
- Both show a $0 entry point: Akeneo's Growth package is listed as starting at $0 a year next to a free trial, and Plytix's Standard plan is free at 100 SKUs.
- Both sell their Shopify connector as an add-on, and both appear in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for PIM.

Factor by factor
Eight factors, each with how the two approaches differ. Open a factor for the sourced facts and the questions to ask both vendors. Nothing here is scored.
How a capability is deliveredDescribes packaging, not quality.

01 · How they differProduct scope and packaging
Akeneo sells supplier onboarding and shared catalogues as add-ons, offers PX Insights analytics as an add-on below Premium, and lists no print module. Plytix lists no supplier onboarding or channel analytics product, and sells feeds, brand portals and PDF data sheets as paid add-ons.
What each vendor sells around the product record, and how it is packaged. Packaging decides what is in the licence, what costs extra, and who you call when something breaks.
Core PIM
The PIM sits at the centre, with product families, completeness tracking and automations.33
Master data beyond products
Product data only: no customer, supplier or location domains in the Product Cloud line-up.7

Print and publishing
Ask both vendors
- Which of our requirements are in the base subscription, and which are separate modules, add-ons or partner apps?
- Who supports a partner app when it breaks: you, the partner or us?
- Can we add a module later without a new implementation project?
02 · How they differData model and governance
Both group attributes into product families with variants. Akeneo adds categories, associations and reference entities, with governance features growing by package; Plytix adds sub-variants and inheritance set per attribute, with rule-based automations from Pro, and we found no approval workflow described.
How products, variants and relationships are modelled, and how each platform keeps data complete and approved. This decides how much of your catalogue fits without workarounds.
Modelling approach
Families of attributes, variants, categories, associations and reference entities, with industry family templates.9
Data quality
Data Quality Insights is part of the Product Cloud.7
Ask both vendors
- Model our three hardest products live: a configurable item, a bundle and a spare part with fitment data.
- How do completeness rules differ per channel and per locale?
- What does a change to the data model cost once we are live?
03 · How they differSyndication and channels
Akeneo sells Activation, with one channel included in every package and a stated reach of 500+ retailers and marketplaces, plus connector apps for Salesforce Commerce Cloud, Adobe Commerce and Shopify. Plytix builds marketplace feeds in its Feed Management add-on, connects to feed tools such as ChannelEngine, Channable and Productsup, and sells Shopify and BigCommerce connectors as add-ons.
How product content leaves the PIM: to your own webshop, to marketplaces and retailers, and to commerce platforms. If the number of channels is your bottleneck, this factor weighs more than the editing screens.
Delivery to retailers and marketplaces
Activation, which Akeneo says reaches 500+ retailers and marketplaces.7
Ask both vendors
- Show a live feed to one marketplace we use, including what happens when the channel rejects an item.
- Which channel connectors do you maintain yourselves, and which do partners maintain?
- When a retailer changes its template, who updates the mapping, and at what cost?
04 · How they differAI features
Akeneo ships agents inside the PIM, extracts product data from images and PDFs, and opens product data to outside AI tools through an MCP server. Plytix has announced no agents and we found no MCP server; Plytix AI generates and translates content and edits images on monthly credits, and ChatGPT feeds carry product data out.
What AI does inside each product, as announced by the vendor. Vendors ship AI features several times a year, so read this as a snapshot and test on your own data.
Agents in the platform
Ask both vendors
- Which AI features are in the subscription, and which are priced per use or per credit?
- Run the enrichment on ten of our real products and show what a reviewer still has to correct.
- Where is our data processed, and is it used to train models?
05 · How they differArchitecture and integrations
Akeneo runs on Google Cloud, on a PHP and Symfony codebase it also publishes as open source, with REST, GraphQL, change events, an App Store and accelerators for SAP S/4HANA. Plytix runs on AWS with Dublin as its primary region, does not publish its stack, and connects through a REST API, webhooks from Pro, an official Make app and a generic ERP connection.
How each platform is hosted, built, extended and connected to ERP, commerce and DAM systems. This is where IT teams spend most of their evaluation time.

Not published beyond hosting: Plytix runs on AWS with Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service.32
APIs

Ask both vendors
- Which connectors for our ERP and commerce platform are yours, and which are built by partners?
- What are the API rate limits, and how long does a bulk import of our full catalogue take?
- Where is our data hosted, and can we choose the region?
06 · How they differPricing and licensing
Plytix publishes monthly prices by SKU count, with unlimited seats and file storage, and quotes catalogues above 25,000 SKUs on request. Akeneo shows an entry point for its Growth package, quotes Advanced and Premium, does not publish its pricing unit and keeps a free open-source Community Edition.

07 · How they differPartners and implementation
We found no published partner tiers for either. Akeneo states 200+ partners and lists apps from Akeneo and partners in its App Store; Plytix's directory lists 33 partners, sorted into agencies and tech partners such as Patchworks and Kolla.

08 · How they differAnalyst coverage
Both appear in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for PIM: Akeneo announced a Leader placement, and Gartner's report places Plytix as a Niche Player. Akeneo also cites IDC and Forrester placements; we found no Plytix statement on either.

Ask both vendors
- Which of the analyst's criteria match our requirements, and where did you score lowest?
Where each tends to fit
Teams tend to shortlist Akeneo when
- suppliers send product data in their own formats, including images and PDFs, and onboarding needs a workflow of its own
- the product model needs associations and reference entities next to families and variants
- developers want GraphQL, change events and an MCP server that reads and writes products
- an open-source edition matters, for a pilot or for a self-hosted setup
Teams tend to shortlist Plytix when
- prices should be visible up front, from a free plan at 100 SKUs, with unlimited seats and file storage on every plan
- the store runs on Shopify, BigCommerce or WooCommerce, and feeds go to marketplaces such as Amazon, Walmart, Zalando or Otto
- partners should browse branded online catalogues, and sales needs PDF data sheets built from live product data
- a no-code automation tool such as Make should connect the PIM to the rest of the stack

Expert view
Akeneo or Plytix: it depends on your requirements
Seen from the product record, Akeneo and Plytix look alike: both are PIM-first SaaS, both organise products into families with variants, and both show a $0 entry point. The real differences show up in what sits around the product record: Akeneo sells supplier onboarding, ships agents and an MCP server and still releases an open-source edition, while Plytix publishes its prices by SKU count and sells feeds, brand portals and data sheets as add-ons.
Akeneo's modular Product Cloud suits teams that want to build around the product record with REST, GraphQL and events, on SaaS or open source. Plytix's published plans and add-ons suit brands and retailers that sell through webshops and marketplaces, many of them on Shopify, and want to see the cost per plan up front. Neither strength matters unless it answers a requirement you can name.
What works best for you depends on your unique requirements. List your SKU count, channels and suppliers first, then test both platforms with your own products. Get in touch and we will gladly help you test both with your own data, vendor-neutral.
Independent advice that starts from your requirements, not from a platform.

Frequently asked questions
What is the main difference between Akeneo and Plytix?
Both are PIM-first SaaS platforms that keep to product data. Akeneo sells a modular Product Cloud on Google Cloud, with supplier onboarding, Activation and AI agents around the PIM and an open-source Community Edition beside it. Plytix runs on AWS, publishes its prices by SKU count, and sells feeds, brand portals, data sheets and store connectors as add-ons. Which difference matters depends on your channels, your suppliers and your catalogue.
Do Akeneo and Plytix publish their prices?
Plytix does, per month by SKU count: Standard is free at 100 SKUs, Pro starts at €149 and Enterprise at €699, and prices above 25,000 SKUs are on request. Akeneo's package page shows the Growth package starting at $0 a year next to a free trial, and Advanced and Premium are quote only. Add the add-ons you need on both sides and compare offers over three to five years.
Can you self-host Akeneo or Plytix?
Akeneo still releases its open-source Community Edition, free under the OSL-3.0 licence, which you can host yourself. Support for the self-hosted Enterprise Edition 7 ended on 30 September 2026, after which Enterprise customers move to SaaS. Plytix is SaaS only, on AWS with Dublin (eu-west-1) as its primary region, and we found no self-hosted edition.
How do the AI features of Akeneo and Plytix compare?
Akeneo ships the Data Architect Agent and Agentic Ziggy inside the PIM, extracts product data from images and PDFs, and runs an MCP server that lets outside AI tools read and write products. Plytix has announced no agents and we found no MCP server: Plytix AI generates and translates content and edits images, on 500 credits a month or the AI Unlimited add-on. Release cycles are short on both sides, so test them on your own products.
Which one fits a brand selling on Shopify?
Neither is ruled out: both sell a Shopify connector as an add-on. Plytix says it serves over 1,000 Shopify merchants, and also sells a BigCommerce connector and marketplace feeds. Akeneo lists Shopify next to Salesforce Commerce Cloud and Adobe Commerce, and sells Activation for retailers and marketplaces. Ask both to show a live sync with your own store.
How do you choose between Akeneo and Plytix?
Write down your requirements first, including your SKU count and how your suppliers deliver data. Then run a scripted demo in which both vendors model your own products, import a real supplier file and publish to one of your channels. Compare the offers over three to five years, including add-ons, connectors and partner work.

How this comparison was built
We compared the two vendors on public information only: their own websites, documentation and press releases, plus reporting that names its source. We did not run either product for this page and we do not score or rank. Where a vendor does not publish something, the page says so instead of guessing.
We have a relationship with every vendor on our platform. None gets preferential treatment: all are compared in the same way, on the same factors, for our customers.
