Akeneo logo

Akeneo

In its own words “The Product Experience (PX) company”5

A French PIM vendor with open-source roots. It sells a SaaS suite it calls the Product Cloud: the PIM at the centre, with digital asset management, supplier onboarding and channel activation around it, and since the PricingHUB acquisition in 2026, pricing as well.

inriver logo

inriver

In its own words “Product information orchestration for the AI era”28

A Swedish PIM vendor, majority-owned by Thomas H. Lee Partners since 2022. Its platform runs as multitenant SaaS on Microsoft Azure and puts weight on how content leaves the PIM: syndication, digital shelf analytics and print from the same record.

“Both do the core PIM job. The real question is which one matches the way your products, suppliers and channels already work.”

Chris JobseCo-founder & PIM architect

What they have in common

Read the differences below against this common ground. Both are credible options for the same broad job.

  • Both are PIM-first: the product record is the core of the platform, not a module of a wider MDM or commerce suite.
  • Both sell to mid-market and enterprise brands, manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers that publish to many channels.
  • Both are sold as vendor-hosted SaaS, with REST APIs, connector marketplaces and AI agents released in 2025 and 2026.
  • Both announced Leader placements in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for PIM and the IDC MarketScape for PIM 2024-2025.
  • Neither publishes a full price list, and both hold ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification.

Product scope and packaging

Akeneo sells more as add-ons around its packages, such as supplier onboarding and shared catalogues. inriver ties more capabilities to its plan tiers, with syndication listed from Core and digital shelf analytics from Professional.

What each vendor sells around the product record, and how it is packaged. Packaging decides what is in the licence, what costs extra, and who you call when something breaks.

02 · How they differ

Data model and governance

Akeneo organises products into families of attributes, with variants and reference entities. inriver models configurable entity types linked to each other, so relations such as product to item or product to resource are part of the model itself.

How products, variants and relationships are modelled, and how each platform keeps data complete and approved. This decides how much of your catalogue fits without workarounds.

Syndication and channels

Akeneo sells channel activation as a product of its own, with a stated reach. inriver combines its own syndication routes with partner networks. The published reach figures count different things, so check your own channel list against both.

How product content leaves the PIM: to your own webshop, to marketplaces and retailers, and to commerce platforms. If the number of channels is your bottleneck, this factor weighs more than the editing screens.

AI features

Both now ship agents inside the PIM and open product data to outside AI tools through MCP. The difference is in packaging and naming more than in direction.

Where each tends to fit

Teams tend to shortlist Akeneo when

  • the team works in the product record every day: enrichment, completeness and translations at catalogue scale
  • suppliers send product data in their own formats, and onboarding needs a workflow of its own
  • developers want GraphQL and events, or already work in PHP and Symfony
  • an open-source edition matters, for a pilot or for a self-hosted setup

Teams tend to shortlist inriver when

  • products have relationships that need their own records, such as bundles, items, spare parts and resources
  • content goes to many retailers and marketplaces, and the team wants to see how it performs on the digital shelf
  • print catalogues and data sheets in InDesign should come from the same record as the webshop
  • the IT landscape runs on Microsoft Azure and .NET, or on SAP S/4HANA Cloud

Expert view

Akeneo or inriver: it depends on your requirements

At first glance, Akeneo and inriver look alike: both are PIM-first, both run as SaaS, and both were named Leaders in the same analyst reports. The differences show up in the details of your project: how your products relate to each other, how many channels you feed, what your IT landscape runs on and how your suppliers deliver data.

Akeneo's modular Product Cloud and open-source roots suit teams that want to build around an API-first product record. inriver's channel output, print and Azure foundation suit teams whose bottleneck is getting content out to many places. Neither strength matters unless it answers a requirement you can name.

What works best for you depends on your unique requirements. Write them down first, then test both platforms with your own products, suppliers and channels. We are happy to help you do that, vendor-neutral.

Independent advice that starts from your requirements, not from a platform.

Frequently asked questions

What is the main difference between Akeneo and inriver?

Both are PIM-first SaaS platforms for mid-market and enterprise companies. Akeneo sells a modular Product Cloud on Google Cloud, keeps an open-source Community Edition, sells supplier onboarding as an add-on and, since 2026, owns the pricing platform PricingHUB. inriver runs on Microsoft Azure and ties syndication, digital shelf analytics and its storefront to plan tiers, with InDesign print as a module. Which difference matters depends on your channels, your catalogue and your IT landscape.

Do Akeneo and inriver publish their prices?

Partly. Akeneo's package page shows the Growth package starting at $0 a year next to a free trial, and Advanced and Premium are quote only. inriver publishes no prices and says every plan is customised. Neither publishes the unit the price is based on, so ask both which metrics drive cost and compare offers over three to five years.

Can you self-host Akeneo or inriver?

Akeneo still releases its open-source Community Edition, which you can host yourself. Support for the self-hosted Enterprise Edition 7 ended on 30 September 2026, after which Enterprise customers move to SaaS. inriver is offered as multitenant SaaS on Microsoft Azure only.

How do the AI features of Akeneo and inriver compare?

Both ship AI agents inside the PIM and expose product data to outside AI tools through an MCP server. Akeneo's agents sit under Agentic Ziggy and its Data Architect Agent. inriver's sit under its Inspire engine, with agents for generation, translation and enrichment. Release cycles are short on both sides, so test them on your own products.

Which one fits a B2B manufacturer?

Neither is ruled out: both name manufacturers among their customers. inriver's product page addresses B2B industrial manufacturers directly, and its model links entities such as products, items and resources. Akeneo's families, variants and reference entities cover most manufacturing catalogues as well. Model your three hardest products in both demos.

How do you choose between Akeneo and inriver?

Write down your requirements first. Then run a scripted demo in which both vendors model your own products, import a real supplier file and publish to one of your channels. Compare the offers over three to five years, including modules, connectors and partner work.

How this comparison was built

We compared the two vendors on public information only: their own websites, documentation and press releases, plus reporting that names its source. We did not run either product for this page and we do not score or rank. Where a vendor does not publish something, the page says so instead of guessing.

We have a relationship with every vendor on our platform. None gets preferential treatment: all are compared in the same way, on the same factors, for our customers.

Spotted something out of date? Email info@pimvendors.com and we will check it against the source.
