PIM comparison
Bluestone PIM vs inriver
A Norwegian and a Swedish PIM-first SaaS vendor. How Bluestone PIM and inriver differ on scope, data model, channels, AI, architecture and pricing, from public sources only.
Same category, two different emphases
Bluestone PIM
In its own words “The Agentic PIM. Agents drive. Humans govern.”1
A Norwegian SaaS PIM vendor, founded in 2016, with a development site in Gdansk, Poland. It sells a headless, API-first PIM with a native DAM, AI skills and an MCP server, and has been a MACH-certified member of the MACH Alliance since 2021. It is aimed at companies that connect product data to composable commerce, ERP systems and AI agents across several markets.
inriver
In its own words “Product information orchestration for the AI era”35
A Swedish PIM vendor, majority-owned by Thomas H. Lee Partners since 2022. Its platform runs as multitenant SaaS on Microsoft Azure and puts weight on how content leaves the PIM: syndication, digital shelf analytics and print from the same record.

“Both cover the product record and its channels. Choose on the cloud your landscape runs on, the channels you feed and how your products relate to each other.”
What they have in common
Read the differences below against this common ground. Both are credible options for the same broad job.
- Both are PIM-first: the product record is the core of the platform, and neither manages customer, supplier or location data as master data domains.
- Both are sold as multi-tenant SaaS only, with no self-hosted or open-source edition.
- Both offer supplier onboarding, print output through Adobe InDesign, agents inside the PIM and an MCP server for outside AI tools.
- Both work with partner networks ranked in Platinum, Gold and Silver tiers, and Avensia builds accelerators for both.
- Neither publishes prices, and both hold ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification and SOC 2 Type II.

Factor by factor
Eight factors, each with how the two approaches differ. Open a factor for the sourced facts and the questions to ask both vendors. Nothing here is scored.
How a capability is deliveredDescribes packaging, not quality.
- In the platform
- Separate module
- Apps or partners
- Not offered
- Not publicly documented
01 · How they differProduct scope and packaging
Bluestone PIM includes a native DAM and a PDF and catalogue generator in the core, and adds extensions such as Supplier Portal, Adobe InDesign Sync and Price Manager. inriver ties capabilities to plan tiers, with syndication and Brand Store from Core and Digital Shelf Analytics from Professional, and connects to outside DAMs such as Bynder and Aprimo.
What each vendor sells around the product record, and how it is packaged. Packaging decides what is in the licence, what costs extra, and who you call when something breaks.
Core PIM
Master data beyond products
Product data only: no customer, supplier or location domains in the feature line-up.11
Product data only: no customer, supplier or location domains in the module line-up.35
Supplier onboarding
Supplier Portal, an extension built by Bluestone PIM, gives suppliers limited access, with completeness rules and review tasks.13
Digital assets
Syndication
Channel performance analytics
No channel or digital shelf analytics in the line-up. Dashboards track product data trends inside the PIM.11
Sharing with partners
No separate sharing portal. The Supplier Portal extension can also give distributors limited access to chosen catalogues.13
Ask both vendors
- Which of our requirements are in the base subscription, and which are separate modules, add-ons or partner apps?
- Who supports a partner app when it breaks: you, the partner or us?
- Can we add a module later without a new implementation project?
02 · How they differData model and governance
Bluestone PIM models category hierarchies, attributes, variants and groups, relations and bundles, with contexts for languages and markets. inriver models configurable entity types joined by link types, with Product, Item and Resource as the common core types, and added a Visual Workflow Builder in March 2026.
How products, variants and relationships are modelled, and how each platform keeps data complete and approved. This decides how much of your catalogue fits without workarounds.
Modelling approach
Category hierarchies, attributes, variants and groups, relations and bundles, with contexts for languages and markets.11
Entity types made of fields, with link types between entities. The common core types are Product, Item and Resource.39
Ask both vendors
- Model our three hardest products live: a configurable item, a bundle and a spare part with fitment data.
- How do completeness rules differ per channel and per locale?
- What does a change to the data model cost once we are live?
03 · How they differSyndication and channels
Bluestone PIM feeds marketplaces directly or through connectors to channel managers such as Productsup and WakeupData, and builds its own connectors for commercetools, Shopify, BigCommerce and Magento 2. inriver sells its own syndication module, Syndicate Advance, partners with ChannelEngine for marketplaces, and builds adapters for Adobe Commerce, SAP Commerce Cloud and Salesforce B2C Commerce.
How product content leaves the PIM: to your own webshop, to marketplaces and retailers, and to commerce platforms. If the number of channels is your bottleneck, this factor weighs more than the editing screens.
Delivery to retailers and marketplaces
Connectors to Productsup and WakeupData for marketplaces, plus 1WorldSync and a GS1 connector by Qmica for trading-partner networks.18
Commerce platform connectors
Connectors built by Bluestone PIM for commercetools, Shopify, BigCommerce and Magento 2. Vaimo builds the Adobe Commerce connector.18
Ask both vendors
- Show a live feed to one marketplace we use, including what happens when the channel rejects an item.
- Which channel connectors do you maintain yourselves, and which do partners maintain?
- When a retailer changes its template, who updates the mapping, and at what cost?
04 · How they differAI features
Both ship agents inside the PIM and an MCP server for outside AI tools. Bluestone PIM pairs a conversational AI Agent with AI skills on a model the customer picks, while inriver groups its agents for generation, translation, enhancement and enrichment under its Inspire engine.
What AI does inside each product, as announced by the vendor. Vendors ship AI features several times a year, so read this as a snapshot and test on your own data.
Agents in the platform
Ask both vendors
- Which AI features are in the subscription, and which are priced per use or per credit?
- Run the enrichment on ten of our real products and show what a reviewer still has to correct.
- Where is our data processed, and is it used to train models?
05 · How they differArchitecture and integrations
Bluestone PIM runs on AWS, is MACH-certified and connects through REST endpoints, webhooks and AWS SQS queues, with SAP sync through its Connectivity Suite. inriver runs on Microsoft Azure on a .NET stack extended with C# extensions, and sells a connector for S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition certified by SAP.

- What are the API rate limits, and how long does a bulk import of our full catalogue take?
- Where is our data hosted, and can we choose the region?
06 · How they differPricing and licensing
Neither publishes prices. Bluestone PIM has no named packages and quotes a range based on usage, with users, SKUs and languages among the inputs; inriver sells four named plans, from Foundation to Enterprise, and does not state its pricing unit.
How each vendor packages its offer and what moves the price. Compare offers over three to five years, including modules, connectors, partner work and your own team, not on the first-year licence.

Ask both vendors
- Which metrics drive the price: products, users, channels, locales, API calls or modules?
- How are renewals priced, and is there a cap on increases?
- What does year three cost if our catalogue doubles?
07 · How they differPartners and implementation
Both rank partners in Platinum, Gold and Silver tiers. inriver states 300+ partners, while Bluestone PIM publishes no count but lists partner extensions, such as composable commerce accelerators, in its Extension Hub.
Who implements the platform, and with what. The partner you pick shapes the project as much as the software does.
Partner network
Solution partners (consultancies and integrators) and ISV partners. No partner count published.29

Ask both vendors
- Which certified partners in our region have delivered a project like ours in the last two years?
- What does your own team do during the implementation, and what is left to the partner?
- Can we speak to two customers in our industry?
08 · How they differAnalyst coverage
In the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for PIM, inriver announced a Leader placement and Bluestone PIM a Visionary placement. inriver also cites IDC and Forrester placements, while Bluestone PIM's latest stated IDC placement dates from 2021 and we found no Forrester Wave that includes it.

Ask both vendors
- Which of the analyst's criteria match our requirements, and where did you score lowest?
Where each tends to fit
Teams tend to shortlist Bluestone PIM when
- the PIM has to feed a composable commerce stack, such as commercetools, through APIs and webhooks
- assets and PDF catalogues should be managed in the core PIM, without a separate DAM
- the team wants to choose the AI model that its enrichment and analysis skills run on
- data has to stay in a chosen AWS region in Europe, the US or Singapore
Teams tend to shortlist inriver when
- products, items and resources need records of their own, linked to each other
- content goes to many retailers and marketplaces, and digital shelf analytics should come from the same vendor
- the IT landscape runs on Microsoft Azure and .NET, and developers are comfortable writing C# extensions
- an SAP-certified connector for S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition is a requirement

Expert view
Bluestone PIM or inriver: it depends on your requirements
Bluestone PIM and inriver look alike at first: both are PIM-first and SaaS-only, both hold ISO/IEC 27001:2022 and SOC 2 Type II, and both offer supplier onboarding, InDesign print, agents and an MCP server. The real differences show up in the cloud each runs on, how each packages its modules, how content reaches your channels and how your ERP connects.
Bluestone PIM's MACH-certified, API-first setup, with the DAM in the core and AI skills on a model you pick, suits teams that connect product data to a composable stack and to AI agents. inriver's tiered modules for syndication and digital shelf analytics, its linked entity model and its Azure and .NET base suit teams whose focus is getting content out to many retailers. Neither profile matters unless it answers a requirement you can name.
What works best for you depends on your unique requirements. Write them down first, then test both platforms with your own products, suppliers and channels. Talk to us if you want help setting up that test with your own data, vendor-neutral.
Independent advice that starts from your requirements, not from a platform.

Frequently asked questions
What is the main difference between Bluestone PIM and inriver?
Both are PIM-first SaaS platforms with supplier onboarding, InDesign print, agents and an MCP server. Bluestone PIM runs on AWS, is MACH-certified, keeps a native DAM in the core and prices on usage without named packages. inriver runs on Microsoft Azure, sells four named plans with syndication and digital shelf analytics tied to tiers, and connects to outside DAMs. Which difference matters depends on your channels, your stack and your catalogue.
Do Bluestone PIM and inriver publish their prices?
No. Bluestone PIM gives a price range after discussing requirements, based on usage such as users, SKUs and languages. inriver sells Foundation, Core, Professional and Enterprise plans and says every plan is customised, without stating what drives the price. Ask both for an offer over three to five years, including extensions, modules and connectors.
Can you self-host Bluestone PIM or inriver?
No. Both are offered as multi-tenant SaaS only. Bluestone PIM runs on AWS with production regions in Europe, the US and Singapore, and customer data stays in the chosen region. inriver runs on Microsoft Azure and is also listed on Microsoft Marketplace.
How do the AI features of Bluestone PIM and inriver compare?
Both ship agents inside the PIM and an MCP server for outside AI tools. Bluestone PIM offers a conversational AI Agent and AI skills such as AI Enrich and AI Analyst on a model the customer picks, and its MCP server has 89 tools. inriver's agents sit under its Inspire engine, for generation, translation and enrichment, and it added MCP Code Writer in June 2026. Test both on your own products.
Which one fits a company that runs SAP S/4HANA?
Neither is ruled out. inriver sells a connector for S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition, certified by SAP on BTP, as an add-on in the SAP Store. Bluestone PIM says its Connectivity Suite delivers a tailored, bidirectional sync with SAP, and we found no SAP-certified connector. Ask both to show the sync with your own SAP edition and data.
How do you choose between Bluestone PIM and inriver?
Write down your requirements first. Then run a scripted demo in which both vendors model your own products, import a real supplier file and publish to one of your channels. Compare the offers over three to five years, including plans, extensions, connectors and partner work.

How this comparison was built
We compared the two vendors on public information only: their own websites, documentation and press releases, plus reporting that names its source. We did not run either product for this page and we do not score or rank. Where a vendor does not publish something, the page says so instead of guessing.
We have a relationship with every vendor on our platform. None gets preferential treatment: all are compared in the same way, on the same factors, for our customers.
