PIM comparison
inriver vs Salsify
Two PIM-first SaaS platforms that put weight on how content reaches channels. How inriver and Salsify differ on scope, data model, channels, AI, architecture and pricing, from public sources only.
Same category, two different emphases
inriver
In its own words “Product information orchestration for the AI era”5
A Swedish PIM vendor, majority-owned by Thomas H. Lee Partners since 2022. Its platform runs as multitenant SaaS on Microsoft Azure and puts weight on how content leaves the PIM: syndication, digital shelf analytics and print from the same record.
Salsify
In its own words “The Intelligent Product Experience Management Company”24
A Boston vendor of product experience management (PXM) software, founded in 2012 and owned by Cinven since 2026. Its multi-tenant SaaS platform pairs a PIM with syndication to retail and commerce destinations, a GDSN data pool and digital shelf analytics. Salsify says it serves brand manufacturers, distributors and retailers, and sells a separate SXM product to retailers that collect data from their suppliers.

“Both are built to get product content out to channels. Compare them on your own channel list and catalogue structure, not on the size of either network.”
What they have in common
Read the differences below against this common ground. Both are credible options for the same broad job.
- Both are PIM-first: the product record is the core of the platform, and neither manages customer, supplier or location master data.
- Both are sold as multi-tenant SaaS only, with no self-hosted or open-source edition, and neither publishes prices.
- Both list syndication in a package called Core and sell digital shelf analytics next to the PIM.
- Both ship AI agents inside the PIM, open product data to outside AI tools through MCP and offer a visual or no-code workflow builder.
- Both connect to Adobe Commerce, Salesforce B2C Commerce and Shopify, and both hold ISO/IEC 27001 certification and SOC 2 Type II reports.

Factor by factor
Eight factors, each with how the two approaches differ. Open a factor for the sourced facts and the questions to ask both vendors. Nothing here is scored.
How a capability is deliveredDescribes packaging, not quality.
- In the platform
- Separate module
- Apps or partners
- Not offered
- Not publicly documented
01 · How they differProduct scope and packaging
inriver ties capabilities to plan tiers, with digital shelf analytics from Professional, sells Print & Publish on Adobe InDesign and integrates with outside DAMs such as Bynder. Salsify includes digital asset management, its channels and some digital shelf reporting in the Core Edition, and licenses GDSN, Enhanced Content and Catalog Sites separately.
What each vendor sells around the product record, and how it is packaged. Packaging decides what is in the licence, what costs extra, and who you call when something breaks.

Master data beyond products
Product data only: no customer, supplier or location domains in the module line-up.5
Product content only: no customer, supplier or location master data domains in the PXM and SXM line-up.29
Supplier onboarding

Digital assets
Digital asset management is part of the Core Edition, with up to 500GB of asset storage.34

Sharing with partners
Print and publishing
Ask both vendors
- Which of our requirements are in the base subscription, and which are separate modules, add-ons or partner apps?
- Who supports a partner app when it breaks: you, the partner or us?
- Can we add a module later without a new implementation project?
02 · How they differData model and governance
inriver models configurable entity types linked to each other, with Product, Item and Resource as the common core types. Salsify treats products as records with properties and digital assets, with two levels of inheritance in the Core Edition and Readiness Reports that check content against each retailer's requirements.
How products, variants and relationships are modelled, and how each platform keeps data complete and approved. This decides how much of your catalogue fits without workarounds.
Modelling approach
Entity types made of fields, with link types between entities. The common core types are Product, Item and Resource.9
Ask both vendors
- Model our three hardest products live: a configurable item, a bundle and a spare part with fitment data.
- How do completeness rules differ per channel and per locale?
- What does a change to the data model cost once we are live?
03 · How they differSyndication and channels
inriver's Syndicate Advance delivers by API, by file, through partners or as a managed service, and a partnership with ChannelEngine adds its marketplace network. Salsify runs a syndication network it puts at 2,600 commerce destinations, plus its own GDSN Data Pool and an OpenAI channel for shopping in ChatGPT.
How product content leaves the PIM: to your own webshop, to marketplaces and retailers, and to commerce platforms. If the number of channels is your bottleneck, this factor weighs more than the editing screens.
Delivery to retailers and marketplaces
Ask both vendors
- Show a live feed to one marketplace we use, including what happens when the channel rejects an item.
- Which channel connectors do you maintain yourselves, and which do partners maintain?
- When a retailer changes its template, who updates the mapping, and at what cost?
04 · How they differAI features
Both ship agents and an MCP route for outside AI tools. inriver names separate agents for generation, translation and enhancement, plus an Enrich Assistant and AI data mapping in Content Onboarding; Salsify centres on one PXM Agent, Angie, and adds AI task types to workflows through its Intelligence Suite.
What AI does inside each product, as announced by the vendor. Vendors ship AI features several times a year, so read this as a snapshot and test on your own data.
Agents in the platform
AI in onboarding
Ask both vendors
- Which AI features are in the subscription, and which are priced per use or per credit?
- Run the enrichment on ten of our real products and show what a reviewer still has to correct.
- Where is our data processed, and is it used to train models?
05 · How they differArchitecture and integrations
inriver runs on Microsoft Azure, on a .NET stack that customers extend with C# extensions, and has an S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition connector certified by SAP. Salsify does not name its cloud provider or publish its stack, offers REST and GraphQL APIs with webhooks, and extends through the PXM App Center.
How each platform is hosted, built, extended and connected to ERP, commerce and DAM systems. This is where IT teams spend most of their evaluation time.
Hosting
Technology
.NET. inriver publishes a .NET package for its Remoting API.11
Not published for the platform itself. Salsify's public GitHub repositories are mostly Ruby and Rails tooling, with Ember libraries for the front end.44
APIs
Extensibility

Ask both vendors
- Which connectors for our ERP and commerce platform are yours, and which are built by partners?
- What are the API rate limits, and how long does a bulk import of our full catalogue take?
- Where is our data hosted, and can we choose the region?
06 · How they differPricing and licensing
Neither publishes prices or a price unit. inriver sells four plan tiers from Foundation to Enterprise and customises every plan; Salsify sells three editions, and its entitlement guide caps the Core Edition at 50,000 records and 100,000 API calls a month.
How each vendor packages its offer and what moves the price. Compare offers over three to five years, including modules, connectors, partner work and your own team, not on the first-year licence.

Packages
Foundation, Core, Professional and Enterprise, with capabilities added per tier.7
Core, Enterprise and Enterprise Plus editions of the PXM Advance Platform. Enhanced Content, GDSN, Catalog Sites and Digital Shelf Analytics are licensed separately.34
Pricing unit

No price unit published. The entitlement guide caps the Core Edition at 50,000 records, 500GB of asset storage and 100,000 API calls a month.34
Ask both vendors
- Which metrics drive the price: products, users, channels, locales, API calls or modules?
- How are renewals priced, and is there a cap on increases?
- What does year three cost if our catalogue doubles?
07 · How they differPartners and implementation
inriver states 300+ partners, with solution partners in Platinum, Gold and Silver tiers, some of whom sell implementation accelerators. Salsify runs solution, technology and retail partner programmes, with five solution partner tiers and partner apps in the PXM App Center.
Who implements the platform, and with what. The partner you pick shapes the project as much as the software does.
Partner network

Ask both vendors
- Which certified partners in our region have delivered a project like ours in the last two years?
- What does your own team do during the implementation, and what is left to the partner?
- Can we speak to two customers in our industry?
08 · How they differAnalyst coverage
In the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for PIM, inriver announced a Leader placement, and Gartner's report places Salsify as the only vendor in the Challengers quadrant. Both announced IDC Leader placements for 2024-2025, and in the Q4 2023 Forrester Wave Salsify announced a Leader placement and inriver was a Strong Performer.
Where analyst firms placed each vendor in recent editions, as announced by the vendor or the analyst. Analysts weigh criteria you may not share, so read this as a map of the market, not a ranking for your project.
Gartner Magic Quadrant for PIM, 2026
Leader, as announced by inriver.20
Challenger, the only vendor in that quadrant, per Gartner's report. We found no Salsify announcement of the placement.23
Ask both vendors
- Which of the analyst's criteria match our requirements, and where did you score lowest?
Where each tends to fit
Teams tend to shortlist inriver when
- products have relationships that need their own records, such as products, items and resources
- print catalogues and data sheets in Adobe InDesign should come from the same record as the webshop
- the IT landscape runs on Microsoft Azure and .NET, or on SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition
- a B2B manufacturer onboards supplier data and wants AI to map it, including from PDF and Office files
Teams tend to shortlist Salsify when
- content goes to many retailers, and each retailer's requirements should be checked before it is sent
- GDSN data has to flow, and the data pool should come from the same vendor as the PIM
- digital assets should live in the PIM itself, with storage included in the base edition
- the company is a retailer collecting product data from its suppliers, through a product built for that

Expert view
inriver or Salsify: it depends on your requirements
inriver and Salsify resemble each other closely: both are PIM-first, both run as multi-tenant SaaS only, and both put syndication and digital shelf analytics next to the product record. The differences show up in how content leaves the PIM and what surrounds it: print or digital catalogues, partner routes or a data pool of the vendor's own, and an Azure and .NET foundation or a stack the vendor does not publish.
inriver's linked entity model, InDesign print and Azure foundation suit teams whose products relate to each other and whose output includes print. Salsify's syndication network, GDSN Data Pool and built-in digital asset management suit teams whose daily work is getting content accepted by many retailers. Neither strength matters unless it answers a requirement you can name.
What works best for you depends on your unique requirements. List them, then run both platforms against your own products, retailers and systems. If you would like a hand, talk to us: we are glad to help you test both with your own data, vendor-neutral.

Frequently asked questions
What is the main difference between inriver and Salsify?
Both are PIM-first SaaS platforms that put weight on how content leaves the PIM. inriver runs on Microsoft Azure, links entities such as products, items and resources, and ties syndication, digital shelf analytics and its Brand Store to plan tiers, with InDesign print as a module. Salsify includes digital asset management and its syndication network in the Core Edition, runs its own GDSN Data Pool and sells a separate SXM product to retailers. Which difference matters depends on your channels, your catalogue and your IT landscape.
Do inriver and Salsify publish their prices?
No. inriver publishes no prices and says every plan is customised, across its Foundation, Core, Professional and Enterprise tiers. Salsify's pricing page leads to a demo request, and its entitlement guide caps the Core Edition at 50,000 records, 500GB of asset storage and 100,000 API calls a month. Ask both which metrics drive cost and compare offers over three to five years.
Can you self-host inriver or Salsify?
No. inriver is offered as multitenant SaaS on Microsoft Azure only, and Salsify as multi-tenant SaaS only, without naming its cloud provider. Neither has an open-source edition, so ask both where your data is hosted and whether you can choose the region.
How do the AI features of inriver and Salsify compare?
Both ship AI agents inside the PIM and give outside AI tools access through MCP. inriver's agents sit under its Inspire engine, with Generate and Translate agents, an Enhance Agent and an Enrich Assistant, plus MCP Code Writer from June 2026. Salsify's PXM Agent, Angie, has run platform-wide since May 2026, and its MCP layer gives access to approved product attributes. Release cycles are short on both sides, so test them on your own products.
Which one fits a brand that sells through retailers and marketplaces?
Neither is ruled out. Salsify says it serves brand manufacturers, distributors and retailers, and its Readiness Reports check content against each retailer's requirements before it is sent. inriver's Syndicate Advance delivers by API, by file, through partners or as a managed service, and its partnership with ChannelEngine adds a marketplace network. Put your own retailer list to both and ask which routes each one runs itself.
How do you choose between inriver and Salsify?
Write down your requirements first. Then run a scripted demo in which both vendors model your own products, publish to one of your retailers and show what happens when that retailer rejects an item. Compare the offers over three to five years, including modules, connectors and partner work.

How this comparison was built
We compared the two vendors on public information only: their own websites, documentation and press releases, plus reporting that names its source. We did not run either product for this page and we do not score or rank. Where a vendor does not publish something, the page says so instead of guessing.
We have a relationship with every vendor on our platform. None gets preferential treatment: all are compared in the same way, on the same factors, for our customers.
Spotted something out of date? Email info@pimvendors.com and we will check it against the source.
