PIM comparison
Salsify vs Stibo Systems
A PIM-first SaaS platform and a multi-domain master data platform with PIM. How Salsify and Stibo Systems differ on scope, data model, channels, AI, architecture and pricing, from public sources only.
Same category, two different emphases
Salsify
In its own words “The Intelligent Product Experience Management Company”2
A Boston vendor of product experience management (PXM) software, founded in 2012 and owned by Cinven since 2026. Its multi-tenant SaaS platform pairs a PIM with syndication to retail and commerce destinations, a GDSN data pool and digital shelf analytics. Salsify says it serves brand manufacturers, distributors and retailers, and sells a separate SXM product to retailers that collect data from their suppliers.
Stibo Systems
In its own words “A leading provider of AI-powered master data management”36
A Danish master data management vendor, founded in 1976 and owned through the Stibo group by the Stibo Foundation. Its STEP platform manages product, customer, business partner, supplier and location data, with PIM, supplier onboarding and syndication packaged as the Product Experience Data Cloud. STEP runs as multi-tenant SaaS on Microsoft Azure, and on-premises releases continue.

“Start with scope. If product content is all you need, compare the channels first; if more domains are coming, compare the master data first.”
What they have in common
Read the differences below against this common ground. Both are credible options for the same broad job.
- Both offer PIM, supplier onboarding, syndication, digital asset management and digital shelf analytics around the product record.
- Both run as multi-tenant SaaS, and neither publishes prices or has an open-source edition.
- Both offer REST and GraphQL APIs, and both opened their data to outside AI agents through MCP in 2026.
- Both share product content with partners through digital catalogues: Catalog Sites and Open Catalog at Salsify, PDX Digital Catalog at Stibo Systems.
- Both hold ISO 27001 certification and a SOC 2 attestation, and both announced Leader placements in the IDC MarketScape for PIM Applications for Commerce 2024-2025.

01 · How they differProduct scope and packaging
Salsify sells product content only, with the GDSN Data Pool, Enhanced Content and Catalog Sites licensed separately. Stibo Systems runs customer, business partner, supplier and location data on the same STEP platform as its PIM, and adds InDesign print through STEP Publisher.
What each vendor sells around the product record, and how it is packaged. Packaging decides what is in the licence, what costs extra, and who you call when something breaks.
Core PIM
PIM is part of the Product Experience Data Cloud, built on the STEP platform.39
Master data beyond products
Product content only: no customer, supplier or location master data domains in the PXM and SXM line-up.7
Customer, business partner, supplier and location data run on the same STEP platform, each as its own Data Cloud.38
Supplier onboarding
SXM Supplier Onboarding, a separate product aimed at retailers collecting product data from their suppliers.11
Product Data Onboarding, with a supplier portal, validation rules and AI-driven data mapping.41
Digital assets
Digital asset management is part of the Core Edition, with up to 500GB of asset storage.12
Syndication
Product Data Syndication, a service in the Product Experience Data Cloud.42
Channel performance analytics
Sharing with partners
Catalog Sites, digital product catalogues licensed by page views, and the free Open Catalog.128
PDX Digital Catalog for sharing authorised content with retailers, and API delivery to global partners.43
Print and publishing
STEP Publisher, a plug-in that places product data and assets in Adobe InDesign, including whole catalogues.48
Ask both vendors
- Which of our requirements are in the base subscription, and which are separate modules, add-ons or partner apps?
- Who supports a partner app when it breaks: you, the partner or us?
- Can we add a module later without a new implementation project?
02 · How they differData model and governance
Salsify treats products as records with properties and digital assets, with two levels of inheritance in the Core Edition and Readiness Reports per retailer. Stibo Systems models object types for products, entities, assets and classifications linked by references, with values per language or country and support for TecDoc, BMEcat, ETIM and ECLASS.
How products, variants and relationships are modelled, and how each platform keeps data complete and approved. This decides how much of your catalogue fits without workarounds.
Modelling approach
Ask both vendors
- Model our three hardest products live: a configurable item, a bundle and a spare part with fitment data.
- How do completeness rules differ per channel and per locale?
- What does a change to the data model cost once we are live?
03 · How they differSyndication and channels
Salsify runs its own syndication network, which it puts at 2,600 commerce destinations, and its own GDSN Data Pool. Stibo Systems' Product Data Syndication reaches retailers such as Amazon, Walmart and The Home Depot, and reaches data pools through connectors and 1WorldSync; we found no Stibo-operated data pool.
How product content leaves the PIM: to your own webshop, to marketplaces and retailers, and to commerce platforms. If the number of channels is your bottleneck, this factor weighs more than the editing screens.
Delivery to retailers and marketplaces
A syndication network that Salsify puts at 2,600 commerce destinations, its own GS1-certified GDSN Data Pool, and an OpenAI channel for shopping in ChatGPT from October 2025.41416
Product Data Syndication reaches retailers such as Amazon, Walmart and The Home Depot, and data pools through 1WorldSync. A partnership with NIQ Brandbank covers 700 retailers and wholesalers in 39 markets, as stated by Stibo Systems.42
Ask both vendors
- Show a live feed to one marketplace we use, including what happens when the channel rejects an item.
- Which channel connectors do you maintain yourselves, and which do partners maintain?
- When a retailer changes its template, who updates the mapping, and at what cost?
04 · How they differAI features
Both open data to outside AI agents through MCP: Salsify's layer covers approved product attributes, while Stibo Systems' server offers a read-only mode and a governed read and write mode. Salsify's PXM Agent, Angie, has run platform-wide since May 2026; Stibo Systems announced its AgentWorkx agent platform in September 2026, and its platform page lists it as coming soon.
What AI does inside each product, as announced by the vendor. Vendors ship AI features several times a year, so read this as a snapshot and test on your own data.

Access for outside AI tools
An MCP layer that gives customers' AI agents and third-party systems access to approved product attributes, announced in May 2026.17
Ask both vendors
- Which AI features are in the subscription, and which are priced per use or per credit?
- Run the enrichment on ten of our real products and show what a reviewer still has to correct.
- Where is our data processed, and is it used to train models?
05 · How they differArchitecture and integrations
Stibo Systems runs STEP on Microsoft Azure or on premises, on a Java stack extended with Java plug-ins, and builds its own IDoc connectors for SAP R/3, ECC and S/4HANA. Salsify does not name its cloud provider or publish its stack, extends through the PXM App Center and lists SAP among its integrations without describing an S/4HANA-specific connector.

Ask both vendors
- Which connectors for our ERP and commerce platform are yours, and which are built by partners?
- What are the API rate limits, and how long does a bulk import of our full catalogue take?
- Where is our data hosted, and can we choose the region?
06 · How they differPricing and licensing
Neither publishes prices or a price unit. Salsify sells Core, Enterprise and Enterprise Plus editions, with Core Edition limits stated in its entitlement guide; Stibo Systems sells a Data Cloud per domain and still releases on-premises STEP next to its SaaS.
How each vendor packages its offer and what moves the price. Compare offers over three to five years, including modules, connectors, partner work and your own team, not on the first-year licence.

Pricing unit
No price unit published. The entitlement guide caps the Core Edition at 50,000 records, 500GB of asset storage and 100,000 API calls a month.12
Not published: no statement on whether price follows records, domains, users or environments.

Ask both vendors
- Which metrics drive the price: products, users, channels, locales, API calls or modules?
- How are renewals priced, and is there a cap on increases?
- What does year three cost if our catalogue doubles?
07 · How they differPartners and implementation
Salsify runs solution, technology and retail partner programmes with five solution partner tiers, and its directory lists firms such as Accenture, VML and Sitation. Stibo Systems' Partner 360 has Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze tiers with a points system, and partners such as Cantor and Sitation sell their own tooling for STEP.

- What does your own team do during the implementation, and what is left to the partner?
- Can we speak to two customers in our industry?
08 · How they differAnalyst coverage
Both announced Leader placements in the same IDC MarketScape for PIM Applications for Commerce. In the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for PIM, Stibo Systems announced a Leader placement and Gartner's report places Salsify as the only vendor in the Challengers quadrant; their Forrester Leader placements come from different Waves, PIM for Salsify and MDM for Stibo Systems.

Ask both vendors
- Which of the analyst's criteria match our requirements, and where did you score lowest?
Where each tends to fit
Teams tend to shortlist Salsify when
- the scope is product content alone, without customer, supplier or location master data
- content goes to many retailers, and each retailer's requirements should be checked before it is sent
- GDSN data has to flow, and the data pool should come from the same vendor as the PIM
- the webshop runs on Shopify, Salesforce B2C Commerce or BigCommerce
Teams tend to shortlist Stibo Systems when
- product data is one domain of several, next to customer, supplier or location data on one platform
- SAP R/3, ECC or S/4HANA exchanges material, customer and vendor master data through IDocs
- the catalogue relies on standards such as ETIM, ECLASS, BMEcat or TecDoc, with values per language or country
- print catalogues in Adobe InDesign should come from the same record as the digital channels

Expert view
Salsify or Stibo Systems: it depends on your requirements
On the product side, Salsify and Stibo Systems look alike: both put PIM, supplier onboarding, syndication, digital assets and digital shelf analytics around the product record, and both open data to outside AI agents through MCP. The differences show up in reach and deployment: whether your programme stops at product content, how you reach data pools, and whether you need SaaS only or on premises as well.
Salsify's own syndication network, GDSN Data Pool and retailer Readiness Reports suit teams that want product content managed and published from one SaaS platform. Stibo Systems' multi-domain STEP platform, SAP IDoc connectors and InDesign print suit teams that want product data governed next to customer, supplier and location data. Neither strength matters unless it answers a requirement you can name.
What works best for you depends on your unique requirements. Write them down, then test both with your own products, suppliers and channels. Talk to us if you would like help with that: we can set up the test with your own data, vendor-neutral.

Frequently asked questions
What is the main difference between Salsify and Stibo Systems?
Both offer PIM, supplier onboarding, syndication, digital assets and digital shelf analytics. Salsify stays with product content, runs its own syndication network and GDSN Data Pool, and is sold as multi-tenant SaaS only. Stibo Systems runs product, customer, business partner, supplier and location data on its STEP platform, adds InDesign print, and offers STEP on Microsoft Azure or on premises. Which difference matters depends on how far beyond product content your programme reaches.
Do Salsify and Stibo Systems publish their prices?
No. Salsify's pricing page leads to a demo request, and its entitlement guide caps the Core Edition at 50,000 records, 500GB of asset storage and 100,000 API calls a month. Stibo Systems publishes no prices on stibosystems.com and splits its offer into Data Clouds per domain. Ask both which metrics drive cost and compare offers over three to five years.
Can you run Salsify or Stibo Systems on premises?
Salsify is offered as multi-tenant SaaS only, and we found no self-hosted edition. Stibo Systems runs STEP as multi-tenant SaaS on Microsoft Azure, which it says 77% of its customers had adopted in FY 2025-26, and still releases on-premises STEP, with change logs up to release 2026.3.
How do the AI features of Salsify and Stibo Systems compare?
Both expose data to outside AI agents through MCP: Salsify announced its MCP layer in May 2026, and Stibo Systems' MCP Server dates from June 2026. Salsify's PXM Agent, Angie, has run platform-wide since May 2026. Stibo Systems announced AgentWorkx in September 2026, starting with Upload Anything and Content Optimizer agents, and its platform page lists it as coming soon. Test both on your own data.
Which one fits a brand that sells through retailers?
Neither is ruled out. Salsify says it serves brand manufacturers, distributors and retailers, and checks content against each retailer's requirements with Readiness Reports before it is sent. Stibo Systems' Product Data Syndication reaches retailers such as Amazon, Walmart and The Home Depot, and its partnership with NIQ Brandbank covers 700 retailers and wholesalers in 39 markets, as Stibo Systems states. Put your own retailer list to both and ask which routes each one runs itself.
How do you choose between Salsify and Stibo Systems?
Write down your requirements first, including any master data beyond products and how you need to deploy. Then run a scripted demo in which both vendors model your own products, onboard a real supplier file and publish to one of your retailers. Compare the offers over three to five years, including modules, connectors and partner work.

How this comparison was built
We compared the two vendors on public information only: their own websites, documentation and press releases, plus reporting that names its source. We did not run either product for this page and we do not score or rank. Where a vendor does not publish something, the page says so instead of guessing.
We have a relationship with every vendor on our platform. None gets preferential treatment: all are compared in the same way, on the same factors, for our customers.
Spotted something out of date? Email info@pimvendors.com and we will check it against the source.
