Stibo Systems logo

Stibo Systems

In its own words “A leading provider of AI-powered master data management”7

A Danish master data management vendor, founded in 1976 and owned through the Stibo group by the Stibo Foundation. Its STEP platform manages product, customer, business partner, supplier and location data, with PIM, supplier onboarding and syndication packaged as the Product Experience Data Cloud. STEP runs as multi-tenant SaaS on Microsoft Azure, and on-premises releases continue.

Syndigo logo

Syndigo

In its own words “We help great products get chosen”41

A Chicago vendor backed by private equity that combines PIM, multi-domain MDM (largely from its 2021 Riversand acquisition), a GS1-certified GDSN data pool and a syndication network it says links 15,000+ brands and 3,500+ retailers. It added 1WorldSync, including PowerReviews, in 2025 and Taggstar in 2026. The platform runs as SaaS on Microsoft Azure.

“Both can master more than products. Test matching on your own duplicates and trace one record to every system that needs it before you choose.”

Stephan SpijkersCo-founder

What they have in common

Read the differences below against this common ground. Both are credible options for the same broad job.

  • Both are multi-domain: product, customer, supplier and location data run next to PIM in the same vendor's line-up.
  • Both run as SaaS on Microsoft Azure and are sold through Azure Marketplace.
  • Both combine rule-based and machine-learning matching, with a match score that decides between automatic merge and review by a person.
  • Both connect product data to GDSN data pools and syndicate it to retailers.
  • Both announced Leader placements in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for PIM, and neither publishes prices.

01 · How they differ

Data domains and scope

Stibo Systems sells each domain, including sustainability, as its own Data Cloud on STEP, and reaches data pools through connectors, among them 1WorldSync, which joined Syndigo in September 2025. Syndigo runs product, B2B customer, vendor and location data on one cloud-native MDM and operates a GS1-certified GDSN data pool of its own.

Which kinds of master data each platform manages, and how far it reaches into product content and retailer networks. This decides whether one platform can carry the whole programme or needs others around it.

Data domains

Stibo Systems

Product, customer, business partner, supplier, location and sustainability data, each sold as a Data Cloud on the STEP platform.9

Syndigo

Product, B2B customer, vendor and location data on one cloud-native MDM. Assets are mentioned without further detail.51

Product content and PXM

Stibo Systems

The Product Experience Data Cloud: PIM, product onboarding, syndication, digital asset management and digital shelf analytics, with ProductGen AI for content.10

Syndigo

PIM with DAM, rich media and analytics in the Product Experience Cloud.4854

GDSN and data pools

Stibo Systems

Through connectors: a GDSN receiver for GS1-synchronised supplier content, a Stibo-built connector to the atrify data pool (third-party licence required) and syndication to 1WorldSync. We found no Stibo-operated data pool.171811

Syndigo

A GS1-certified GDSN data pool with 7,500+ trading partners in 25 countries. 1WorldSync, another GDSN data pool operator, joined Syndigo in September 2025.5244

Syndication to retailers

Stibo Systems

Product Data Syndication to retailers, distributors and marketplaces, with Excel, JSON, XML and BMEcat output for custom channels.11

Syndigo

Syndication to 2,000+ recipients, and rich media to 3,500+ retail partners, as stated by Syndigo. PowerReviews syndicates reviews to retailers.535455

Ask both vendors

  • Which of our domains (product, customer, supplier, location, asset) run on one data model, and which need a separate module?
  • Show one supplier that is also a customer: how do the records relate?
  • Which retailer and data-pool connections do you operate yourselves?
02 · How they differ

Matching, golden record and data quality

Both score matches and send uncertain ones to people. Stibo Systems documents survivorship rules with trusted source priority and validates addresses and firmographics through Loqate and Dun & Bradstreet; Syndigo moves records through Source, Address and Golden Record Management stages, and we found no public description of its survivorship rules.

How each platform finds duplicates, decides which value wins and keeps data clean. This is the core of master data management, and where demos are easiest to stage and hardest to prove.

Match and merge

Stibo Systems

Match scores fall into auto-merge, clerical review and non-match bands, and matching runs again as records change. AI-supported matching works alongside rules.2416

Syndigo

Deterministic and ML-based match rules, with standardisation and a match profiler. A match-score threshold decides between automatic and manual merge.65

Golden record and survivorship

Stibo Systems

Source records merge into golden records through survivorship rules with trusted source priority. A wrong merge can be undone in the Web UI.2425

Syndigo

Records pass through Source, Address and Golden Record Management stages. We found no public description of survivorship rules.65

Data quality

Stibo Systems

Profiling, validation rules, completeness scores and a quality metric from 1 to 100 per object, with address and firmographic validation through Loqate and Dun & Bradstreet.12

Syndigo

Business rules per entity for computation and validation. Location MDM adds address validation and geospatial checks.6551

Hierarchies and relationships

Stibo Systems

Objects link through references and link types. Customer profiles can model households and hierarchies.1316

Syndigo

Graph, Hierarchy and Organization views of related entities. Vendor MDM links supplier hierarchies.6551

Ask both vendors

  • Run matching on an extract of our own duplicates and show the false positives.
  • How do survivorship rules handle two trusted sources that disagree?
  • Who maintains the matching rules after go-live: business users or specialists?
03 · How they differ

Governance and stewardship

Both route uncertain matches to data stewards and keep an audit trail of changes. Stibo Systems builds workflows in a graphical designer with deadlines and escalation per state; Syndigo runs golden record workflows in MDM and approval workflows in PIM, and logs the actions of its Synapse agents for audit.

How changes are proposed, approved and traced, and what data stewards work in every day. Governance decides whether the golden record stays golden after the project team leaves.

Workflow and approvals

Stibo Systems

Workflows built in the STEP Workflow Designer, with assignees, deadlines and escalation rules per state, and conditions on transitions.26

Syndigo

Configurable golden record workflows in MDM and approval workflows in PIM. Synapse keeps human checkpoints at key agent decisions.655057

Stewardship tools

Stibo Systems

Possible matches go to data stewards in a clerical review workflow. Workflow states can be mapped to Web UI screens.2426

Syndigo

Manual merge for matches below the automatic threshold. Syndigo's training defines Data Steward and Data Governor roles for this work.6566

Audit and lineage

Stibo Systems

Automated audit trails, data lineage tracking and version control, as described by Stibo Systems. Unmerge relies on revision history.1424

Syndigo

  • Show a change request from a business user to an approved record, with the audit trail.
  • What does a data steward's worklist look like on a normal Monday?
  • How do we prove to an auditor who changed what, and when?
04 · How they differ

Architecture and integration

Both run on Microsoft Azure. Stibo Systems adds GraphQL and message-based exchange over channels such as Kafka and SFTP, and builds its own IDoc connectors for SAP; Syndigo offers REST APIs and EDI with the low-code Integration Studio, and we found no S/4HANA connector described.

How each platform is hosted and how it connects to ERP, CRM and commerce systems. MDM sits in the middle of the landscape, so integration effort often outweighs licence cost.

Hosting

Stibo Systems

Multi-tenant, cloud-native SaaS on Microsoft Azure, sold through Azure Marketplace since 2023. On-premises STEP is still released.92223

Syndigo

SaaS on Microsoft Azure, with backups kept across Azure availability zones. Sold through Azure Marketplace.4746

APIs

Stibo Systems

IDoc connectors built by Stibo Systems for SAP R/3, ECC and S/4HANA: MATMAS for material, DEBMAS for customer and CREMAS for vendor master data.192021

Syndigo

No S/4HANA connector described. The App Marketplace lists SAP among its connectors, and Integration Studio claims prebuilt links to 700+ enterprise systems.6362

Ask both vendors

  • Which connectors for our ERP and CRM are yours, and which are built by partners?
  • How do changes reach downstream systems: batch, events or APIs?
  • Where is our data hosted, and can we choose the region?

AI features

Both apply machine learning to matching. Syndigo's Synapse agent platform has run on its MDM since March 2026, while Stibo Systems' AgentWorkx, announced in September 2026, is listed as coming soon; Stibo Systems runs an MCP server, where we found none for Syndigo.

Where each tends to fit

Teams tend to shortlist Stibo Systems when

  • customer, supplier, location and sustainability data each need a governed domain on one platform
  • survivorship rules with trusted source priority, and a way to undo a wrong merge, are on the requirement list
  • SAP R/3, ECC or S/4HANA exchanges material, customer and vendor master data through IDocs
  • on-premises deployment must stay an option next to SaaS on Microsoft Azure

Teams tend to shortlist Syndigo when

  • product data has to reach retailers through a GDSN data pool and a syndication network from the same vendor
  • the company is a retailer that collects supplier data through a portal, APIs or EDI
  • agents in the MDM should work with human checkpoints and an audit log of their actions
  • ratings and reviews, digital shelf analytics or feeds into ChatGPT belong on the same roadmap as master data

Expert view

Stibo Systems or Syndigo: it depends on your requirements

Stibo Systems and Syndigo both manage product, customer, supplier and location data on Microsoft Azure, both score matches and route uncertain ones to stewards, and both reach retailers and data pools. The real differences show up in what sits around the golden record: Stibo Systems builds every domain on its STEP platform, while Syndigo combines its MDM, largely from the Riversand acquisition, with a GDSN data pool and a network of brands and retailers.

Stibo Systems suits organisations that want documented survivorship rules, SAP IDoc connectors and a choice between SaaS and on-premises deployment. Syndigo suits brands and retailers that want master data, a GDSN data pool and a retailer network from one vendor, with agents working inside the MDM. Neither strength matters unless it answers a requirement you can name.

What works best for you depends on your unique requirements. Map your domains, sources and downstream systems first, then run matching on an extract of your own duplicates in both demos. We are happy to help you set up that test, vendor-neutral.

Independent advice that starts from your requirements, not from a platform.

Frequently asked questions

What is the main difference between Stibo Systems and Syndigo?

Both manage product, customer, supplier and location data next to PIM, on Microsoft Azure. Stibo Systems sells each domain as a Data Cloud on its STEP platform, documents survivorship rules and still releases on-premises STEP. Syndigo runs its MDM, largely from the Riversand acquisition, as SaaS next to a GS1-certified GDSN data pool and a syndication network of brands and retailers. Which difference matters depends on your domains, your sources and the systems that consume your master data.

Do Stibo Systems and Syndigo publish their prices?

No. Stibo Systems publishes no prices on stibosystems.com and splits its offer into Data Clouds per domain. Syndigo publishes no prices either, and its Product Experience Cloud pages direct buyers to sales. Neither publishes the unit the price is based on, so ask both which metrics drive cost and compare offers over three to five years.

Can you run Stibo Systems or Syndigo on premises?

Stibo Systems still releases on-premises STEP next to multi-tenant SaaS on Microsoft Azure, which it says 77% of its customers had adopted in FY 2025-26. Syndigo describes PIM and MDM as cloud-native SaaS on Microsoft Azure, and we found no private cloud or on-premise option. If deployment on your own infrastructure is a requirement, raise it early with both.

How do the AI features of Stibo Systems and Syndigo compare?

Both apply machine learning to matching: Stibo Systems learns from steward feedback on customer records, and Syndigo runs ML-based match rules next to deterministic ones. Syndigo's Synapse agent platform has run on its MDM since March 2026; Stibo Systems announced AgentWorkx in September 2026, and its platform page lists it as coming soon. Stibo Systems also offers an MCP server for outside AI tools, while Syndigo publishes product feeds into ChatGPT through OpenAI Connect. Test the features on your own data.

How do Stibo Systems and Syndigo handle GDSN and retailers?

Syndigo operates a GS1-certified GDSN data pool with 7,500+ trading partners in 25 countries, and 1WorldSync, another data pool operator, joined it in September 2025. Stibo Systems works through connectors: a GDSN receiver, a connector to the atrify data pool that needs a third-party licence, and syndication to 1WorldSync, plus Product Data Syndication to retailers such as Amazon, Walmart and The Home Depot. If your retailers expect GDSN, ask both how your data reaches the pools they use.

How do you choose between Stibo Systems and Syndigo?

Map your domains, sources and downstream systems first. Then run a scripted demo in which both vendors match an extract of your own duplicates, take a change request through to an approved record and send it to your ERP. Compare the offers over three to five years, including domains, connectors, partner work and your own stewardship team.

How this comparison was built

We compared the two vendors on public information only: their own websites, documentation and press releases, plus reporting that names its source. We did not run either product for this page and we do not score or rank. Where a vendor does not publish something, the page says so instead of guessing.

We have a relationship with every vendor on our platform. None gets preferential treatment: all are compared in the same way, on the same factors, for our customers.
