PIM comparison
Akeneo vs Syndigo
Two SaaS PIM platforms, one with open-source roots, one tied to MDM and a retailer network. How Akeneo and Syndigo differ on scope, data model, channels, AI, architecture and pricing, from public sources only.
Same category, two different emphases
Akeneo
In its own words “The Product Experience (PX) company”5
A French PIM vendor with open-source roots. It sells a SaaS suite it calls the Product Cloud: the PIM at the centre, with digital asset management, supplier onboarding and channel activation around it, and since the PricingHUB acquisition in 2026, pricing as well.
Syndigo
In its own words “We help great products get chosen”24
A Chicago vendor backed by private equity that combines PIM, multi-domain MDM (largely from its 2021 Riversand acquisition), a GS1-certified GDSN data pool and a syndication network it says links 15,000+ brands and 3,500+ retailers. It added 1WorldSync, including PowerReviews, in 2025 and Taggstar in 2026. The platform runs as SaaS on Microsoft Azure.

“Both handle the product record. Start from where your data has to go and which domains it touches, then let both vendors prove it on your own products.”
What they have in common
Read the differences below against this common ground. Both are credible options for the same broad job.
- Both sell PIM as vendor-hosted SaaS, with digital asset management listed next to the product record.
- Both sell a supplier onboarding product, and both use AI to extract product data from images.
- Both have released AI agents inside the platform since 2025, and both list commerce connectors, Shopify among them.
- Both announced Leader placements in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for PIM.
- Neither publishes a full price list or the unit the price is based on, and neither lists a print module.

Factor by factor
Eight factors, each with how the two approaches differ. Open a factor for the sourced facts and the questions to ask both vendors. Nothing here is scored.
How a capability is deliveredDescribes packaging, not quality.
- In the platform
- Separate module
- Apps or partners
- Not offered
- Not publicly documented
01 · How they differProduct scope and packaging
Akeneo keeps to product data, with supplier onboarding, shared catalogues and PX Insights as add-ons and PricingHUB as a separate business unit. Syndigo sells multi-domain MDM as a separate solution next to its PIM, and adds services such as PowerReviews ratings and reviews and Taggstar conversion messaging.
What each vendor sells around the product record, and how it is packaged. Packaging decides what is in the licence, what costs extra, and who you call when something breaks.
Core PIM
PIM in the Product Experience Cloud, with catalog management, data modelling and data quality rules.35
Master data beyond products
Product data only: no customer, supplier or location domains in the Product Cloud line-up.7
Supplier onboarding
Digital assets
Digital asset management is listed as part of the PIM, next to catalog management.35
Syndication
Channel performance analytics
Sharing with partners
Print and publishing
Ask both vendors
- Which of our requirements are in the base subscription, and which are separate modules, add-ons or partner apps?
- Who supports a partner app when it breaks: you, the partner or us?
- Can we add a module later without a new implementation project?
02 · How they differData model and governance
Akeneo organises products into families of attributes, with variants, associations and reference entities. Syndigo describes a low-code configurable model with taxonomy management and attribute mapping to industry standards and retailer specifications, and runs data quality checks before content is syndicated.
How products, variants and relationships are modelled, and how each platform keeps data complete and approved. This decides how much of your catalogue fits without workarounds.
Modelling approach
Families of attributes, variants, categories, associations and reference entities, with industry family templates.9
Data quality
Data Quality Insights is part of the Product Cloud.7
Ask both vendors
- Model our three hardest products live: a configurable item, a bundle and a spare part with fitment data.
- How do completeness rules differ per channel and per locale?
- What does a change to the data model cost once we are live?
03 · How they differSyndication and channels
Akeneo sells Activation as a product of its own, with one channel included in every package and a stated reach of 500+ retailers and marketplaces. Syndigo syndicates through its own network of recipients and a GDSN data pool, and since October 2025 through OpenAI Connect into ChatGPT; the published reach figures count different things, so check your own channel list against both.
How product content leaves the PIM: to your own webshop, to marketplaces and retailers, and to commerce platforms. If the number of channels is your bottleneck, this factor weighs more than the editing screens.
Delivery to retailers and marketplaces
Activation, which Akeneo says reaches 500+ retailers and marketplaces.7
Ask both vendors
- Show a live feed to one marketplace we use, including what happens when the channel rejects an item.
- Which channel connectors do you maintain yourselves, and which do partners maintain?
- When a retailer changes its template, who updates the mapping, and at what cost?
04 · How they differAI features
Both ship agents inside the platform and use AI on incoming supplier data. Akeneo also opens product data to outside AI tools through an MCP server; for Syndigo we found no MCP server, and its OpenAI Connect publishes product feeds into ChatGPT instead.
What AI does inside each product, as announced by the vendor. Vendors ship AI features several times a year, so read this as a snapshot and test on your own data.
Agents in the platform
AI in onboarding

Ask both vendors
- Which AI features are in the subscription, and which are priced per use or per credit?
- Run the enrichment on ten of our real products and show what a reviewer still has to correct.
- Where is our data processed, and is it used to train models?
05 · How they differArchitecture and integrations
Akeneo runs on Google Cloud, on a PHP and Symfony codebase it also publishes as open source, with REST, GraphQL and change events. Syndigo runs on Microsoft Azure, does not publish its stack, and offers REST APIs and EDI with an App SDK and the low-code Integration Studio.
How each platform is hosted, built, extended and connected to ERP, commerce and DAM systems. This is where IT teams spend most of their evaluation time.

- What are the API rate limits, and how long does a bulk import of our full catalogue take?
- Where is our data hosted, and can we choose the region?
06 · How they differPricing and licensing
Neither publishes a full price list. Akeneo shows an entry point for its Growth package and keeps a free open-source edition; Syndigo directs buyers to sales, sells editions for Brands and for Retail, and offers SaaS only.
How each vendor packages its offer and what moves the price. Compare offers over three to five years, including modules, connectors, partner work and your own team, not on the first-year licence.

- What does year three cost if our catalogue doubles?
07 · How they differPartners and implementation
We found no published partner tier levels for either. Akeneo states 200+ partners and lists apps from Akeneo and partners in its App Store; Syndigo states 100+ solution integrators and technology partners, and certified partners can build private apps with its App SDK.

- Can we speak to two customers in our industry?
08 · How they differAnalyst coverage
Both announced Leader placements in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for PIM and in an IDC MarketScape for PIM. In Forrester, Akeneo cites a Strong Performer placement in the Q2 2021 PIM Wave and Syndigo in the Q2 2025 MDM Wave.

Ask both vendors
- Which of the analyst's criteria match our requirements, and where did you score lowest?
Where each tends to fit
Teams tend to shortlist Akeneo when
- product data is the whole scope, and the team wants a product record organised in families, variants and reference entities
- suppliers send product data as images and PDFs, and onboarding needs a workflow of its own
- developers want GraphQL, change events and an MCP server that reads and writes products
- an open-source edition matters, for a pilot or for a self-hosted setup
Teams tend to shortlist Syndigo when
- product data has to reach many retailers through one network, including a GS1-certified GDSN data pool
- the company is a retailer that collects supplier data through a portal, APIs or EDI
- B2B customer, vendor or location data should be mastered by the same vendor as the PIM
- ratings and reviews, digital shelf analytics or feeds into ChatGPT belong on the same roadmap as product content

Expert view
Akeneo or Syndigo: it depends on your requirements
Akeneo and Syndigo start from common ground: both sell PIM as SaaS, both ship AI agents, and both announced Leader placements in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for PIM. The real differences show up in what sits around the product record: Akeneo keeps to product data and still releases an open-source edition, while Syndigo combines PIM with MDM, a GDSN data pool and a network of brands and retailers.
Akeneo's modular Product Cloud suits teams that want to own their product model and build around it with REST, GraphQL and events, on SaaS or open source. Syndigo's network, data pool and retailer tooling suit brands and retailers whose main task is exchanging product content with trading partners. Neither strength matters unless it answers a requirement you can name.
What works best for you depends on your unique requirements. List your channels, suppliers and data domains first, then test both platforms with your own products. We are happy to help you set up that test, vendor-neutral.
Independent advice that starts from your requirements, not from a platform.

Frequently asked questions
What is the main difference between Akeneo and Syndigo?
Akeneo is PIM-first: its Product Cloud on Google Cloud keeps to product data, with DAM, supplier onboarding and Activation around the PIM and an open-source Community Edition beside it. Syndigo combines PIM with multi-domain MDM, a GS1-certified GDSN data pool and a syndication network it says links 15,000+ brands and 3,500+ retailers, on Microsoft Azure. Which difference matters depends on your channels, your data domains and your IT landscape.
Do Akeneo and Syndigo publish their prices?
Partly. Akeneo's package page shows the Growth package starting at $0 a year next to a free trial, and Advanced and Premium are quote only. Syndigo publishes no prices, and its Product Experience Cloud pages direct buyers to sales. Neither publishes the unit the price is based on, so ask both which metrics drive cost and compare offers over three to five years.
Can you self-host Akeneo or Syndigo?
Akeneo still releases its open-source Community Edition, free under the OSL-3.0 licence, which you can host yourself. Support for the self-hosted Enterprise Edition 7 ended on 30 September 2026, after which Enterprise customers move to SaaS. Syndigo describes PIM and MDM as cloud-native SaaS on Microsoft Azure, and we found no private cloud or on-premise option.
How do the AI features of Akeneo and Syndigo compare?
Both ship AI agents and use AI to extract product data from images. Akeneo's agents sit under Agentic Ziggy and its Data Architect Agent, and an MCP server lets outside AI tools read and write products. Syndigo's sit under Synapse and the SynapseGo chat interface, and its OpenAI Connect publishes product feeds into ChatGPT; we found no Syndigo MCP server. Release cycles are short on both sides, so test them on your own products.
Which one fits a brand that sells through many retailers?
Neither is ruled out. Akeneo sells Activation, which it says reaches 500+ retailers and marketplaces, with one channel included in every package. Syndigo syndicates to 2,000+ recipients and runs a GDSN data pool with 7,500+ trading partners. The figures count different things, so check your own retailer list against both.
How do you choose between Akeneo and Syndigo?
Write down your requirements first, including which data domains beyond product are in scope. Then run a scripted demo in which both vendors model your own products, import a real supplier file and publish to one of your retailers. Compare the offers over three to five years, including modules, connectors and partner work.

How this comparison was built
We compared the two vendors on public information only: their own websites, documentation and press releases, plus reporting that names its source. We did not run either product for this page and we do not score or rank. Where a vendor does not publish something, the page says so instead of guessing.
We have a relationship with every vendor on our platform. None gets preferential treatment: all are compared in the same way, on the same factors, for our customers.
Spotted something out of date? Email info@pimvendors.com and we will check it against the source.
